How Swiss Army Knives Became Famous
The amazing scenery and Swiss chocolates are not the only things that are characteristic of Switzerland. An intelligent discovery which has come from the land of Alps with snow covered peaks is Swiss army knives which has a large following.
Swiss army knives are personalized totally and they are absolutely terrific. They have amazing features. The whole tool box can be packed into a small packet resembling like a large key chain and remain entirely practical.
The starting of the Victorinox factory by Karl Elsner in the year 1884 was the reason for the invention of the Swiss army knife. He had worked in Paris and Germany as part of his apprenticeship, and then started his own cutlery shop where he employed the use of grinding and polishing machine which required a waterwheel.
The Swiss army knives were basically designed for the army in the year 1891 which could be kept in our pocket comfortably. The Swiss army then patented two of Karls creations, the Sports knife as well as the Swiss Officers knife when Karl presented it for the first time.
Earlier only Karls company was legally permitted to supply the Swiss army with these knives but after some time the job was being shared by Wenger and Victorinox as well. Later according to the agreement between the two companies the rights to advertise the old school original Swiss Army Knife was awarded to Victorinox.
The emblem featuring the cross and the shield was adopted by Karl in 1909. To this date the symbol is a sign of the quality knives produced by Vitorinox. The company actually gets its name from Karl Elsners mother who was named Victoria.
Victorinox Swiss Army knife, the name came from Victoria who was the mother of Karl who combined the name with French term for stainless steel inox. Thus Victorinox was created in remembrance of his mother after her demise.
During the 2nd world war, the Swiss Officers Knife was being openly sold to the Americans. Then the term Officers Knife was altered to Swiss Army Knife due to the increasing sales of the product.
The Victorinox due to its fast paced development eventually took over Wenger. Now a day its being used by astronauts, mountaineers or ocean explorers as well. The company has introduced many of its new products like professional knives, household knives, watches, clothing, luggage which has given them lot of fame.
