MLM Prospects Versus The MLM Myth: Who Succeeds?

By Kevin Ihrig
Aug 21, 2009
Have your MLM prospects ever asked you why only 1% of distributors succeed? What did you say? Try on the answer below for a better comeback.

Sure, you and I have seen our share of failures in MLM, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. You can become successful in this field, and so can your MLM prospects.

Real Numbers
Usually, when someone calls up the 1% number, they are referring to the people in a company earning a substantial amount of money. Typically, a six figure income makes your newbies stop and stare.

Companies have to release figures annually about who succeeds and who earns what based on their pay plan.

Let me add a few ideas to your discussion about this topic.

1. Consultants or Customers?
I have been in a fair number of MLM's. I didn't always join to become the next multimillionaire to cross the stage. In many cases, I just wanted to buy a few products.

Do you know these customer consultants? I would estimate that up to two out of every three people (2/3) of many companies fall into this category.

What does this do to the numbers? If you skip the people who don't want to work the business, you have just tripled your likelihood of success, to 3%, instead of 1%.

2. Failure, or Less Success?
As I look over the stats from an MLM company, I see that after the six figure earners, I find another group that averages about $30K per year.

Granted, you won't go down in history for that. But is that a failure? I don't see it that way. This looks like a person who has started earning and started learning the ropes.

This group participates and sees a sizable benefit from their business. Maybe, for whatever reason, they don't want to be in the top rung of the pay plan right now.

Whatever the reason, calling them all failures simply doesn't make sense.

In my example company stats, this group makes up 4% of the distributors.

In pure numbers, the stats show 5% or 1 in 20 can see a substantial benefit, or what could be called a full time income. If I again eliminate the 2 out of three that don't really want to work, just buy at a discount, what happens?

You now can tell your MLM prospects that 5% of the remaining third achieves strong results and substantial income. That's 1 in 7. These are substantially better odds. The myth is fading fast.

3. Repetition and Training Make A Big Difference
Last, think about this. How many businesses does the successful MLM distributor try before she makes some money? Just one?

Not in my experience. My mentors tell me they tried several companies until they found one that clicked for them. I think that happens quite often.

This suggests that if you don't succeed in one business, you might try another. Try, try again, right?

Those people at the bottom of one business can go on to the next and improve their capability and their results. They can get a better sponsor or better training.

The result? They move up in performance and income.

Kill the Myth of 1% Success
Sometimes it's hard to understand what statistics mean. I know, I had to suffer through more than one of those classes!
