Will David Beckham Survive At LA Galaxy

By Stellar Stevens
Aug 24, 2009
Amid speculation abound as to David Beckham's commitment to the LA Galaxy cause - according to the Home Depot faithful who are less than impressed with the former England captain's recent jet-setting betwixt Italy, the UK and America - we take a look at the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder's current, media-scrutinized predicament for what it's worth and attempt to dispel rumours that Beckham's heart just isn't in the Californian footballing dream any more.

Verbal attacks and character assignations is hardly new territory for David Beckham, yet the tirade he's had to endure this past few weeks have served to remind us of just how fickle the worlds of both football and celebrity can turn out to be as we try to unpick where his American adventure all went wrong.

From a fervent England fan's perspective, we take this tack. To answer his many American critics, let's make one fact perfectly clear from the outset. He upped sticks and moved his family to America for the one reason; to attempt to achieve the impossible. To make America wake-up to football. Given that the world-revered likes of even Pele hadn't really accomplished that task many years before meant the omens weren't particularly encouraging, but nevertheless Beckham's naivety blotted out what was to the rest of us observers, the inescapable truth of the matter.

That being Americans just don't do football. They don't get it. And if they do, well, they simply don't want it. End of story.

David Beckham was already one of the planet's highest paid sportsmen before he went to LA Galaxy, make no mistake, and he could have retired there and then. Money is not his motivator, greed is not his God, unlike many of his contemporaries and the legions of pretenders to his throne. He ideologically wished to take the beautiful game stateside and try where every other failed.

Fast foward to summer 2009 though, and for what reason is he now being persecuted let us remind ourselves? Ahh. By wanting to continue representing his country for as long as he physically can. Quite the sin. And what has he put on the line to follow his perpetual dream? Erm, nothing. Beckham needs to remain match fit at this stage in his footballing career, and with due respect to the MLS, the level and general standard of the game lacks the cut and thrust, and general stamina and optimum fitness a pre-requisite for challenging weekly in the showcase European football leagues.

Beckham unsettled his own family's lifestyle by wishing to pursue his ambition of turning out for England in a major tournament for the one last time, and will obviously do whatever it takes to achieve this goal.

He has let no one down by upping sticks and signing - albeit on a temporary basis - for AC Milan to retain his match fitness during what was close season for the MLS, perhaps inadvertently missing a few games at the top and tail of the campaign, and has returned stronger than ever after putting in tremendous performances out on the pitch for both Milan and England during his sabbatical from LA Galaxy. Indeed, if anyone's benefiting from his period away then it's his club team as he's been privy to - and has had access to - the very latest pre and post-match health, fitness and recovery programmes to ensure he remains at the top of his game that much longer.

Finally think on this. Beckham is a player who is famous in the game for putting in 110% for whatever team he enters the field of play whilst in the employment of, whilst spending many more hours than his team-mates on the practice pitches at whichever club he's been a key team member of over his career.

Those few LA Galaxy fans in the minority should open their eyes a little wider to what world football is actually all about, and salute one of the few professional professionals left in the game instead of getting on his back in our opinion before he really does decide it's time to throw in the towel.
