If you're interested in lowering your cholesterol, one of the best ways to do it is to start taking a more active interest in what you are cooking. When you take control of your diet and start to consciously think about what goes into it, you'll have a better understanding of both your food and your own body. When you have decided to prepare foods that will help with your cholesterol count, there are several things that you can keep in mind.

Even when dieting to bring down your cholesterol level, there is no reason to completely deny yourself meat. Instead, the key is in how you prepare it. Starting in the supermarket, select lean cuts of meat and before cooking, trim off all visible traces of fat. Be aware of your what you are eating because even lean meat has a certain quantity of saturated fat. Try broiling rather than pan-frying when dealing with highly fatty meats like hamburger and lamb chops, and when you broil, you can utilize a rack to drain off the fat. When you are browning meat, brown it under the broiler rather than inside a pan in order to avoid the fat being reabsorbed into the meat.

Even while cooking with vegetables, there are a few things you can keep in mind when considering your cholesterol level. Use vegetable oil when cooking, and supplement the flavor with herbs and spices. There are many things that you can think about doing when you're cooking, like using low fat milk or using brown rice instead of white. There are lots of fun meals that you can cook while keeping these strictures in mind; for instance consider the classic curried rice, or eating spiced and flavored popcorn as a meal. Look for recipes that will help you eat healthily.

Keep in mind that some methods of cooking require less fat than others. Boiling, baking, roasting and poaching are all methods of cooking that require less in the way of fats and oils during preparation. Be careful of recipes that call for bacon fat, chicken fat, or bacon; these recipes add quite a bit to your cholesterol count. Try replacing the fat with margarine or vegetable oil. You can still eat your favorite recipes; all you have to do is substitute the fattier ingredients for the the healthier ones.

With a little bit of thought, you'll realize that lowering your cholesterol though cooking is something that anyone can do!
