The Most Favoured Poker Games

By Fred Ramsbottom
Aug 27, 2009
It is a widely regarded fact that poker, in one form or another is the most popular and favourable card game in any casino around the world today. With so many different variations available to play, it is possible for most people, regardless of their ability, to find a poker variant to suit them.

Due to vast array of poker games that are available in modern day casinos, both offline and online, it is almost impossible, with the exception of Texas Hold Em being at the top, to put them in any type of list in terms of indefinite or overall popularity. However, by taking a look at the games that feature in the World Series of Poker tournament, it is possible to get an idea of which games are currently seen as the most popular.

Texas Hold Em. Without doubt the most popular poker game, Texas Hold Em is the staple of the World Series of Poker and is the game that is played at the final table. With a history dating back approximately one hundred years, it is possible to date the time when Texas Hold Em really became popular, which was in 1967 when it was first brought to Las Vegas. However, it was not until the turn of the 21st century when the game evolved into what it is today.

Razz. A popular poke variant that has been included in the World Series of Poker since 1973, razz is a stud game and is the R in the poker game H.O.R.S.E. Generally played as a lowball game, the aim of razz is to create the lowest possible valued hand available out of the seven dealt cards, with the best hand possible being ace through to five, known as the wheel.

Omaha. Similar in style to the ever popular Texas Hold Em, Omaha is a community game in which all players are provided with four hole cards and then they must create the best hand possible by using three of the community cards and two of their own cards.

Played in many variations itself, such as Omaha Hi-Low where the pot is split between the highest scoring hand and the lowest scoring hand, several variations are included in the modern day WSOP tournament.

Seven Card Stud. Often said to be the predecessor to Texas Hold Em, seven card stud was once the most popular poker game in America. Still played regularly in home games, it is one of the more complex standard poker games, which is, for many poker players, the reason why it is still played and featured regularly in the World Series of Poker.

These examples are not by far the only poker games that are played, in both the WSOP and casinos in general. From the three main variations of poker, community, draw and stud, there are dozens of variations under these terms and then dozens more variations of these. It may take some time to find the most suitable poker game, but it is without question that it will definitely be out there.
