A Network Marketing Opportunity: What You Should Look For Before Joining

By Gregory McGuire

In looking at a network marketing opportunity, what would you say is the most important factor before joining?

From what I've read, many people seem to think that products are the most important thing. And yes, if you don't believe that what you're selling is worth much, you'll have a tough time selling it to others.

But even if you have the world's greatest product, it's not going to help you much if all it's doing is sitting in your garage gathering dust. So maybe the product isn't that important after all.

Others would say that the company itself is the most important factor in determining which network marketing opportunity you go with. They say look for a company that's been around a while and has a great track record. After all, if they've been around for more than 10 years, they must be doing something right. Right?

Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that joining a well-established company with awesome products does little to insure your success. It doesn't matter if the company's been around for 10 years or 10 months; if they tell you to make a list of your family and friends, they're setting you up for failure.

If your company "training" consists of weekly hotel meetings where you walk away feeling jazzed, but still have no idea how to promote your business, count yourself among the majority of network marketers--those who fail within just a few months of joining a network marketing opportunity.

If it's not the products that are important, and it's not the company, then what is the most important factor you should consider before joining a network marketing opportunity? The answer by now should be clear.

Training.

You'd think network marketing companies would provide quality training for their distributors so those distributors could become successful, but this is never the case. The company almost always spews the same, generic crap. "Just tell enough people what you're doing and about your products, and soon you'll be mega-successful."

Follow this formula and you'll fail. I guarantee it.

Therefore, instead of looking at a company or products, look for a team or an upline that provides the kind of training you need to be successful. What kind of training is that?

Firstly, network marketing training should be generic. What that means is that you should be able to use the same techniques, regardless of what company you're with.

How do you insure the team you're about to join will provide the training you need? Here are some points to keep in mind:

1. Are most of their marketing efforts focused online? If not, you'll want to pass. The internet allows network marketers to reach more people than at any other time in history, and not leveraging its power is just plain stupid.

2. Are you being asked to sell? If they teach objection-handling and cold-calling, this is not something you want to be a part of. These are old-school methods that don't work for most people in today's market.

3. Do they teach you how to generate your own leads? This is an essential skill, and any system that does not teach this is less than effective. Without your own, highly targeted leads, your marketing will suffer. If, on the other hand, they suggest buying leads, I'd run as fast as I can the other way.

Finding the right network marketing opportunity can be a challenge. If you just join a company and tell a few people what you're doing (which is what most network marketers do), you'll probably be among the 95% of those who fail in this industry.

If, on the other hand, you proactively learn how to properly market yourself and your business online, there is literally no force in the Universe that can stop you.
