The Legacy of the Bay Area Zodiac Killer Lives On Today

By Raymond U. Piker
Aug 28, 2009
Many people live with fond memories and illusions about the "wonderful era of the 1960's". It was the time of rock n roll legends, of peace marches and more. Yet the 1960's had more of their share of terror and evil inclinations. The San Fransisco Bay Area "Zodiac Killer" was one such black mark. This incarnation of evil and publicity seeker lives onwards even to this day. It is not only a matter of downright fascination with this character . Its not only a matter that he never was caught. Media images and copycats exist even to day. Think of the Son of Sam, the Manson family and the Dirty Harry movies of Clint Eastwood. Whom do you these characters of portrayed or actual murders mirror a pattern of ?

All in all in the late 1960's the Zodiac ruled the minds and hearts of most in the San Fransisco Bay regional areas. San Fransisco in the 1960's was not only love and peace , Haight Ashbury - its hippies and longhairs , drugs and lsd , with young kids tramping across the country to this legendary city , its environs and characters. The Bay Area of the late 1960's was also the favored hunting ground of the Zodiac.

It took the local police some time and puzzlement to identify the patterns of these killings. Not only was perhaps new and novel. Nothing like this had even occurred previously in the annals of the American police field and sectors. Perhaps even the Zodiac had murdered even more victims before perfecting his trade and skills . Perhaps the police had ignored or not noticed previous efforts. The killer may have never "bragged " of his work , either not being proud of it , thinking it either not worthy of his later fame, or perhaps concerned that loose clues may have abounded. It was only when the executioner became even more bold of his tales and methods , and publicized his efforts and effects to the local newspaper media both leaving cryptic puzzles , as well as bragging that "I love to kill humans ... humans are the most fun to hunt", that events and patterns clicked in and the police paid rapt attention.

The Zodiackiller would continue these letters and taunting for many years. Though only seven victims were conclusively connected to the zodiac, it's no doubt that he may have easily had a hand in the rest of the slayings.

The police had one major suspect , through all their efforts , one Mr. Arthur Leigh Allen. Though Mr. Allen and his proclivities were well known and established , the expert police could never make the case stick.

It may have been just plain luck or happenstance that Mr. Arthur Leigh Allen could never be properly charged in the legal system , taken off the streets , and tried in a true criminal court. The amazing thing is that if these events occurred today , a good trial lawyer could make a very strong case , that his client could never get a "fair " trial anywhere in the United States or indeed anywhere in the world. It was as if the roulette tables were fixed both against the capture of this villain and even his treatment in the legal system and court of law.

Mr. Allen , the chief suspect by the police , in terms of the actual identity of the famed murderer died in 1992 of renal failure. He took his secrets to the grave with him. Perhaps it is rumored that the Zodiac Killer has a daughter who may one yet step forward to reveal the truth in these matters.

With no more ways to run along the clues of this past killings and the zodiac killer, the San Francisco police closed the case. That was in the year of 2004, it's a shame that no one will ever really know the real truth. A fascinating case is that of the zodiac killer, if you get a chance read the book.
