FC Dallas could not stop Chad Marshall from scoring off a corner kick, and the Columbus Crew cruised to a 2-0 victory and extended their win streak to five. Get MLS tickets and see Marshall score a goal. Marshall scored his fourth goal of the season. In the 87th minute, Eddie Gaven tacked on another goal to make it 2-0. Columbus (10-3-9) remains in first place in the Eastern Conference. They have been on a roll lately, going 6-0-2 since losing at FC Dallas (6-10-5) on June 20. Marshall's goal came after Alejandro Moreno drew a corner kick that Dallas disputed. Robbie Rogers flicked the ball back to the side of the net, where the 6-foot-4 Marshall jumped over Atiba Harris for the header that beat goalkeeper Dario Sala.

FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman called Marshall's goal the bread and butter in the air. The coach continued to say it was a great goal and Dallas knew exactly what Marshall was going to do when he went air born to register his fourth goal of the year. Dallas captain Drew Moor said his team practiced corner kicks with Marshall in mind. The defender also stated that his team's goal was to limit Columbus from their corner kicks and set pieces because they knew they were very dangerous with Marshall. Rogers took the corner in place of reigning MLS MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who connected with Marshall for four goals last season.

Schelotto has been out of the lineup for four games, but managed to enter the Dallas contest in the 90th minute. The forward has a hamstring strain. He got a standing ovation from his fans for making an effort to play. Marshall and Rogers serves a different ball than Schelotto, though the results were the same. Marshall noted that Robbie likes to hit the ball to the far post. So the defender made a quick sprint to a well served ball and got good placement on it. Gaven, normally a starter, entered the game in the 75th minute with fresh legs. He broke free at midfield and went the distance without being defended until he was 17 yards from the goal. The midfielder then drilled a shot on net and scored.

Gaven stated he was ready to enter the game if his team needed him. The midfielder said that when you come off the bench you have so much energy that it actually helped since Dallas was tired. He put that energy to good use by scoring the second goal for the Crew. Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer recorded his third consecutive shutout, preserving it in the 72nd minute when he knocked a close-range header from Jeff Cunningham over the bar. Hyndman gave the Crew a lot of credit for playing an excellent match. His team failed to earn their third straight victory. Columbus moved the ball well throughout the game. The coach proclaimed that the Crew can head up the field very quickly and mentioned that their flanks are killers. Columbus' home attendance of 19,115 was a season high.
