Lap Band - How Much Can I Eat After Lap Band Surgery And Will I Feel Full? - Nurse's Guide

If you're thinking about having lap band surgery or adjustable gastric banding surgery one of the questions that may have come to mind is how much can I eat after the surgery? This may be a concern because you're probably used to eating a certain amount of food each day and need to know how to adjust after the surgery and what that entails.

You want to know you won't be depriving yourself and especially may want to feel full. The thought of feeling hungry may have occurred to you also.

With a lap band system or adjustable banding surgery you'll eat less food and feel full. Your stomach capacity will be reduced for one thing. There will only be so much room there and then you'll feel full. Also it will take the food longer to go through your digestive system. So even with a small amount of food you should feel full. As many know, often people eat a lot of food because they don't feel full or are afraid they'll experience hunger.

The amount of food you eat will differ from person to person after the surgery. Your lap band weight loss doctor or bariatric surgeon can best explain this to you but make sure to go over this before your surgery or while you're in the planning stages.

Lap band surgery is meant to be a helpful part of a weight loss plan by helping you change your eating habits. You'll be given good nutrition guidelines and suggested diet and eating program so you'll be eating a lot healthier too. You'll be taught how to choose your foods and how to chew them well. In no case should you ever feel hungry or deprived.

Before you commit to lap band or any other type of gastric banding or adjustable banding surgery make sure you understand all the risks and complications that can occur. If you plan to travel to Mexico or out of the country to get cheaper lap band surgery make sure you know how you'll be followed up after you get home. You want to have this lined up before you go. Some surgeons in the U.S. may not want to look after patients who have had surgery in other countries.

Do plenty of research before you commit to lap band surgery just as you would any other type of surgical procedure. It does come with risks but may be less risky than a gastric bypass for example which is a permanent procedure.
