Real Salt Lake had their chances to break a scoreless game, but Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad came up big in net. Get MLS tickets and see Onstad record a shutout. The goalkeeper made six saves for the Houston Dynamo in a 0-0 tie with Real Salt Lake. Onstad registered his MLS-leading ninth shutout of the season for Houston (11-6-6). The goalkeeper's best save came in the 45th minute when he robbed Robbie Findley of a goal right in front of the net. Onstad told the press his save was a reaction save. He acknowledged that he didn't get all of the shot and was grateful that his teammates bailed him out with the rebound. Findley had another golden opportunity to score in the 49th minute, but his diving header that beat Onstad ricocheted off the crossbar.

Nick Rimando had a quiet game for Salt Lake (7-8-6); the goalkeeper did not have to make a save since none of Houston's three shots went on goal. The match saw plenty of action from RSL's midfielders. Will Johnson hit the side of the net in the 15th minute and Findley's header bounced wide of the goal in the 35th minute. Kyle Beckerman had a scoring opportunity; he hammered a shot from outside the penalty box straight to Onstad in the 42 minute. The Houston goalkeeper played a sharp game. RSL head coach Jason Kreis said from the first whistle to the final whistle, his team's focus was always on the match. He continued to say everything was there except the finishing touches.

Houston's previous shutout came July 4, and in the six games following that contest, the Dynamo had given up ten goals. Onstad recognized that his team has not played well defensively in the past couple of games. He said his team has not been pleased with the way they have been playing defensively over the past few weeks. However, the goalkeeper stated that his team did a nice job of limiting RSL's opportunities. Houston head coach Dominic Kinnear said the Dynamo players were not in the locker room giving each other high-fives for the scoreless draw. The coach mentioned that his team worked really hard to earn a point away from home. Kinnear thanked the post in the second half for not allowing RSL a goal. He thought his team looked pretty sharp defensively.

In the second half, both teams played with 10 men. The Dynamo went a man down in the 36th minute, when defender Andrew Hainault received his second yellow card of the game for fouling Salt Lake's Fabian Espindola. Hainault's picked up his first yellow card in the ninth minute, which was also a foul on Espindola. RSL's one-man advantage didn't last long, as Clint Mathis also earned two yellow cards in the first half. His first one came in the fourth minute on a tackle from behind against Houston's Geoff Cameron. The second yellow card came when Mathis slammed the ball on the ground after not agreeing with the lineman's call of a goal kick. RSL received 19 fouls during the match, while the Dynamo got called for 10.
