Which Internet Service To Choose?

By Taylor Jensen

Gone are the days of slow dial-up, forever downloads, and computers freezing up. Well okay, granted computers still do freeze up on occasion, but not as severely now as they use to a few years ago; especially if you have killer software that is constantly keeping an eye out for your computer. Now you have options of having a faster dial-up connection, DSL (digital subscriber line) Internet, and even more advanced, satellite Internet. Each of these types of Internet connections has different options available to the consumer.

For those of us who are technophobes or less than informed on the Internet possibilities, let's enhance on the different types of Internet connections. First, what is a dial-up connection? A dial-up connection is a form of Internet access through a telephone line. So basically your computer is attached to a modem connected to a telephone line to dial into an ISP (Internet Service Provider), then voila! You have your Internet access. Although, don't plan on getting any phone calls on your land line while you surf the Net.

Next up, we have DSL Internet access. A digital subscriber line uses existing copper pair phone line wiring along with special hardware on the switch and user ends of the line. This special hardware allows for a continuous digital connection over phone lines without compromising the use of your regular telephone line. DSL is quicker than your average dial-up connection, and it seems more convenient especially if you're a multi-task type of person who talks on the phone and works on your computer at the same time. Now they have DSL PowerBoost which enables you to experience faster connection speeds while you're downloading and uploading large files to the Internet.

Then we come to satellite Internet. With satellite high-speed Internet you are getting your Internet via satellite. Satellite Internet does not require the need for a phone line or hard-wired cable. Your computer is connected to a satellite modem which is linked to a satellite dish. Information is sent and received through the satellite dish and processed by the modem. This gives you one of the fastest and most reliable wireless broadband Internet connections today.

Now dial-up and DSL are some good options to have available, but what if you were living in a rural area and none of the phone lines or cables were available to you? This is where satellite Internet access becomes your best option. You can be anywhere, nationwide, and have a lightning fast connection. Concerned about the pricing on this type of Internet? There are a few providers out there with the cheapest satellite Internet prices available.

Now with this knowledge in mind, choose the service that will best fit your targeted needs.
