How To Write Breathtaking Characters And Claim Your Spot On the Bestseller List
The heart of any gripping bestseller is a strong character. Not a two-dimensional character that will easily and obviously overcome the obstacles and destroy the bad guy. A real, believable character. Somebody just like you. As long as stories have been told, audiences have been drawn to real people, in real situations, struggling with real life issues, and rooting for them to overcome and conquer.
Peter Parker has money and girl problems. Superman can't tell Lois he loves her. Luke Skywalker has family issues. When you recall some of your favorite books and movies, you will realize that one of the primary drivers of your interest was a character you could identify with. A character that allowed you to imagine what you would do in their situation.
Something magical happens when you read a good book, or watch a good movie, or even listen to skilled storyteller spin a tale. You unconsciously release all the problems of everyday life and go along with the main character on their journey. When they struggle, you struggle. When they win, you win.
It's like you can forget everything else that was going on, and only pay attention to what is happening right here, right now. When you can learn to do this, you know you've got something powerful on your hands. Something that can move and inspire others, and make a lot of money in the process.
If you've ever experienced a feeling of "where did the time go" when you experienced a three hour movie that seemingly passed by in twenty minutes, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Characters are essential to any good story. When you develop characters for your novel, make sure they are people that will resonate with readers. The easiest way to do that is to make them just like you. Take some of your own weaknesses, and give them to your character. If you are deathly afraid of heights, make your character afraid of heights. If you are shy around the opposite sex, make your character shy around the opposite sex.
One of the greatest things about being a writer is you get to take your own personal shortcomings (and believe me, we all have our share of shortcomings!) and transform them into your strengths as a writer. And the more honest you are with yourself, the more believable your characters will be. Which of course, will make your stories more entertaining, and your career as a writer all the more successful.
