Chewing And Digging - Two Habits To Break

Aug 17, 2007
One of the biggest problems owners face, other than house breaking is chewing, and dogs can find things to chew in an empty room! My dog chewed the front piece of wood on my couch; I didn't realize it until I sat down one day and ruined a pair of pantyhose.

The corner she had chewed was about 9 inches wide and went down into the wood 7 or 8 inches! It was time for me to teach her not to chew on things!

Chewing is a normal pattern for dogs, one of the big reasons dogs chew is to relax. There are other reasons and they can threaten your rapport with your dog! This is a destructive habit that needs to be altered.

Your dog may chew because he is teething, and just like with a baby it hurts (a lot). Giving him frozen rawhide bones is a wonderful way to begin breaking this habit. Keep a few in the freezer for him, just like you would do for a baby.

Since a dogs attention span is about a foot long, it is a good idea to get 10 or 12 rawhides chews to freeze, put five down, then in a few days, put them back into the freezer and put down the other five.

Each one smells a little different, and this gives him a variety of things to chew on without endangering your furniture or shoes!

Also provide your dog with lots of toys, you can never have too many of them and he will get a lot of comfort from them, even when you are not around.

Play with him and his toys so he learns that they are fun to chew and he can choose them over other items he isn't supposed to have.

NEVER GIVE A DOG AN OLD SHOE OR SOCK AS A TOY, he wont know the difference between the ones he can have and the ones he isn't supposed to have!

Boredom is another reason a dog will chew, he cant go to school or work each time, doesnt understand soap operas, and can talk to his friends on the phone, and so he chews out of boredom! Further training issue solved by chew toys, isnt it worth all the times you have tripped over those toys.

There are a lot of reasons a dog will dig holes, it may be instinct, during the winter the wolf will eat all of the comestible that he kills, this is because he is unsure of the next trick he will eat.

During the summer, he will dig a break and cloak part of the kill and return later to finish concrete off, this is a lot like your dog burying a bone in the backyard. A dog that is outside in the summer may dig a hole to get out of the heat, in the winter he may dig a hole to get out of the cold.

They may also dig because they dont get enough exercise; it is a great way to relieve that extra energy. ( Have you ever watched how much energy a dog puts out when he digs a hole? )

This is usually because the owner doesnt realize how much energy a dog has, and doesnt give him the amount of exercise he needs. Yelling and screaming only reinforces the activity with negative attention, any attention is better than no attention, just ask your dog.

When you give negative support, you only make the quandary worse; more holes are a real problem.

If you are one of the lucky few and your dog digs in panorama of you, just capable him no, may solve the hot water.

However, tremendously holes are not dug in our substantiality, especially if the dog digs from boredom, because when you are there, he isnt bored.

One way of stopping this habit is to put a wooden stake in the center of the hole he has dug, tie him to the stake with his lease and leave him there for about 20 minutes.

It will take a few more holes, but after you have several holes with stakes in the middle, he will disturb the stake to the hole and being tied to the stake and the hole digging will stop.
