Join the POS and ePOS Revolution
POS sytems and ePOS systems are rather strange sounding terms that seem to be straight out of a Star Wars movie. What these letters really stand for is Point of Sale Systems, and Electronic Point of Sale Systems.
You may have heard the term Point of Purchase which refers mainly to advertising techniques and products such as counter displays, floor stands, display bins, banners, or window displays.
All these are designed to grab a shopper's interest and encourage them to buy something, right there, on the spot. A company may create their own custom made displays in their showrooms or stores, but this is not as much the case anymore.
These days it is usually the manufacturer of the products who supplies the merchandising displays to the wholesaler or retailer. This way the advertising is controlled and linked to media advertising as well. The shopping experience today can be a veritable jungle of signs, ads, and slogans popping out at you from everywhere.
The stage is now set to reel in the sales that inevitably will result from all this enticing graphic bait. What the shop keeper or retailer now needs is the electronic equipment to quickly and efficiently complete the sale.
Gone are the days of tallying items in a hand written bill book, working out the taxes manually and coming up with a total. Practically gone as well are cash transactions and the making of change.
Today, due to major technological developments, retailers rely on computerized, electronic equipment to manage and complete, not only the actual sales transaction, but inventory and stocking control, payroll, and accounting. Anything that is associated with making a sale is stored on a database.
All this technology has meant tons of advantages for businesses large and small and the customers they depend upon. Most of this is relatively new, catching on in only the last ten years or so.
The aids that are available today boggle the mind. There are mobile point of sale systems, barcode scanners, and systems for businesses that do all their sales online. Customers can use debit cards, credit cards, and present the coupons they found online and printed on their desktop printer.
Clerks can check prices instantly on a database if necessary, and there are many stores where the shopper can wave the barcode of an item they are interested in buying in front of a stand-alone scanner, and up pops the current price. No more surprises during check-out.
We are now so used to the beep, beep, beep, of the check out process that most of us can barely remember what it was like before the advent of electronic point of sale systems. Why, we can even process our own orders in many supermarkets and large retail operations.
If you are thinking of going electronic or upgrading, do some research online, and talk to fellow entrepreneurs. There are systems manufactured and reasonably priced for small to medium sized companies that will undoubtedly elevate your efficiency and profitability. No question.
