When you are getting ready to start eating healthily and lowering your cholesterol, you might be dismayed by how few places will be able to help you do that! If you are like many people in the world, you are drawn to the convenience and ease of walking into a restaurant and being served, but if you are on a low cholesterol diet there are lots of things to consider.

When you are cooking for yourself it's easy to see -and be appalled by!- how much fat goes into your food. You will see how much butter, lard and chicken fat go into a recipe and you can adjust accordingly. Of course, at a restaurant, you won't be able to do that. You'll be at the mercy of someone else's cooking and depending on how skilled the chef is, you might not even be able to taste the offending ingredients.

When eating out, there are a few hints and tips you might want to keep in mid that can keep your cholesterol lower. The first thing is to try taking a look at the non-entree items. Many of them are just as tasty as a regular meal, cost less, and will be a bit healthier to boot. Check the breakfast menu for anything that seems suitably light. You might want to ask what goes into the eggs, though; often scrambled eggs contain whole milk, but you might be able to request a plate with low-fat milk instead. You can also keep an eye on the salads that are offered, as those tend to be healthier for you.

Don't be afraid to ask what goes into a dish. Is there lard in it or bacon fat? What about butter? Is it possible to take those out? Keep in mind that there are a lot of things that you can do to affect a dish that is served to you. Just by asking that a certain ingredient be taken off of the dish, you can make it substantially healthier.

While you're at a restaurant, you can mostly guess that the meat will be a bit fattier than you would normally like at home. You can just skip the meat entirely and head to the vegetarian option, or you can see if they have a portion of the menu that is specifically for low fat options. Your chances of avoiding cholesterol do tend to increase the nicer the restaurant. Try to avoid diners and greasy spoons when you are getting ready start eating healthy.

Even when eating out there are plenty of reasons for you to do what you can to avoid cholesterol, and just by keeping a few things in mind, this couldn't be easier!
