Disney Tips: 6 Must-Know Tips and Tricks for Disney Travel

By Jamie Jefferson

The happiest place on earth can be a little crowded and hectic if you don't know a few tips and tricks. Here are 6 things to know before you go on your Disney vacation.

1. First things first: Get your free Disney planning DVD. Because the Disney resorts and theme parks are so popular, it's easy to find information on where to go and where to stay during your trip.

The first thing you'll want to do is to send away for your Disney Parks Vacation Planning DVD (it's free) from the official Disney Parks website. (Just do an online search for "Free Disney Vacation Planning DVD.")

Gather the family and watch the DVD, which will give you an inside look at both Disneyland and Disney World. You'll be able to preview the different rides and you'll get tips on other things you might want to do, as well.

Take notes while your family is watching the DVD to see which attractions are most appealing to each member of your family.

2. Disney's off-season runs from October through April, so you'll end up spending less if you can book during these times.

3. Make sure you know how many days you want to spend in the park. You can save loads of money by purchasing more than one day's worth of tickets. However, when we visited Disneyland, we were a bit surprised to discover that our kids actually wanted to spend more days at the beach than in the park. (And that really saved us money.) Our days on the Orange County beaches were much cheaper (and, for our family, just as fun) as our days in Disneyland.

4. If you choose to stay at a Disney hotel, you'll be right next to the park, which is super convenient, but you can often save a bundle by staying at one of the other hotels that are nearby. In Anaheim, you'll find quite a few affordable hotels that are still within walking distance of Disneyland. And many of the hotels that are several miles from the park have free Disney shuttles, too.

5. Plan your day. As soon as you enter the park, check to see which shows you want to see and schedule your day accordingly. Also, check to see which rides offer the FastPass option and secure your FastPass reservations. (The Disney FastPass allows you to make a reservation for some of the most popular rides. You simply get a FastPass ticket that gives you a window of time to return so that you can bypass most of the long line.)

6. Eat smart. Disneyland and Disney World offer quite a few dining options. To save money, eat breakfast before entering and eat dinner after you leave.

During our time at Disneyland, our children were pretty overwhelmed and overstimulated by lunchtime and we used the lunch hour to leave the park and take a long, leisurely lunch at a nearby restaurant. Then we returned to the park refreshed.

If you do eat lunch in the park, you'll be able to bypass some of the crowds by waiting until 1:30 or 2 to eat, if possible.

As with all family travel, all you need is a little advanced planning (and some flexibility once you get there) to enjoy a wonderful and affordable family vacation.
