Dogs Allowed In The Workplace Is Becoming A Welcome Trend

By Art Gib

A new trend is slowly spreading throughout the corporate world and that is, the workplace is becoming pet friendly, specifically, dogs are allowed to come to work with their owners. I noticed it more on the West coast in high tech offices in Northern California and media production offices in Southern California. There's something about an office that allows dogs to rest under the desk at their master's feet while programming or building websites or editing commercials or feature films

Senator Ted Kennedy used to go to his office on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. with his dogs. It is reported that Google is the best place to work where the environment is very comfortable, provides gaming areas, lounges, gourmet meals and allows dogs to wander through the hallways to top off the creative atmosphere. Being pet-friendly is becoming a trend at high-end hotels where special beds, treats, and accommodations are for dogs.

A recent survey by the American Pet Products Association Manufacturers found that 20% of companies have pet-friendly policies as reported in the March 10 issue of USA Today. As long as dogs are well behaved and the owners abide by some simple rules, dogs and employees can co-exist in the office. The Human Society of the United States released a publication, Dogs at Work: A Practical Guide to Created Dog-Friendly Workplaces. HSUS claims not to proselytize to corporations, but makes it available as a guide for businesses that are considering this policy.

Owning a dog and taking your best friend everywhere has been a popular trend for many years. And along with this trend is to provide all the comforts and luxuries to lavish on Benji or Stella (two popular names for man's or woman's best friend).

There is a rise in popularity of fancy custom dog beds, designer dog bows, and hands free dog leash for a multi-tasking owner or dog walker. How about couture fashion or just a plain leather dog leash? A lot of attention is paid to fashion and luxuries for dogs, which in turn, is a multi-million dollar business for entrepreneurs.

As long as our pets provide us with the comfort and loyalty of a best friend, a favorite child, a devoted companion, why not provide the best for them? After all, the bottom line is, our pets provide therapy and the business world is beginning to catch on to a therapeutic trend.
