Is Technology Threatening TV?
History has taught us that if you fight against certain societal changes, those changes might destroy you - or make you obsolete.
Change is inevitable. The key to survival is to adapt. Modern technological changes are affecting the availability of television shows. The problem the television industry is facing right now is that shows are being illegally downloaded on the internet. The industry must figure out how to adapt to this problem.
The music industry is still facing this problem. Executives spent a lot of time trying to control the flow of music. What they discovered was that no matter how hard they fought it, they were unable to prevent the illegal copying of music. After spending thousands of dollars on ad campaigns and enforcement, the industry started figuring out how to make money from these downloads. They are currently making more music available via the internet and finding ways to capitalize on the inevitable file sharing.
The television industry is going to need to follow suit. They can continue battling for a model that is obsolete, or they can strategize plans that allow them to profit from what is happening around them. Instead of putting all of their time, energy, and money into stopping people who are copying and downloading content, maybe it's time for executives to find a way to cash into all of this free publicity. There are shows I have become aware of because of some Youtube clip or because I saw an episode of a show loaded onto a Facebook page.
Instead of making this content unavailable and trying to monitor what is out there, why not look at this trend as an opportunity? The internet is reaching more audiences then a single television station has access to. While most people skip over commercials that advertise what is coming up next, they are likely to watch an episode of a show that catches their interest while searching on the internet.
I don't have a specific plan to offer the executives. I realize they are fighting for the survival of their genre in an economically strapped world. But the time has come for them to strategize regarding the changing world in which they are doing business. The sooner they change their approach to the internet, the sooner they can find a workable solution that will allow them to profit from the change. That is how history can help us change the future.
