A Comparison of 'Good Cholesterol' vs 'Bad Cholesterol'
If you are just getting started in the quest towards understanding your body and what it needs, you might be a bit confused by the repeated references to cholesterol. You will see plenty of information on what cholesterol is and what it can do, but you might be a bit confused over why it seems to be a good thing in about half of the articles and a hideously bad thing in others. The important thing to remember is that there are two different types of cholesterol and by achieving a better understanding of them, you can have a much better idea of what you need to do to keep healthy.
First, remember that cholesterol is a substance created by your body in order to maintain normal cell functions. Cholesterol is necessary in terms of helping your body function and having too little is just as bad as having too much! The issue is, when your body is overwhelmed with too much cholesterol your system might be able to support it. Cholesterol, like all fats, are necessary to human life; it acts in the cell membranes and makes many hormones that are extremely important to the human body. It even creates some nutrients that can fend off other attackers.
Low density lipoproteins, also know as LDL, is a type of cholesterol is the substance that is typically known as bad cholesterol This cholesterol can build up on the walls of your arteries, creating arterial blockages that result in serious heart problems. As the veins get clogged with fat, they narrow and prevent good blood flow. Not only can this result in heart failure, but the blockage created by the fatty deposits in the arteries can also create any complications, up to and including limb loss!
High density lipoprotein, which is more commonly known as HDL, is another type of cholesterol is commonly known as the good cholesterol and it actually clears out the dangerous LDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol carries cholesterol from the arteries through the system to the liver, where the cholesterol can begin the process of being expelled from the body. With a high HDL content in your body, it will be easier to lower the risk of heart disease.
When you're trying to get healthy, remember that there is a lot you need to know. Your best weapon is to be prepared and to find out what the things you are cooking represent. At the same time, however, realize that all the information is out there and that with a little bit of preparation, you'll be able to get healthy and stay healthy!
