Adirondack Chairs Make Sweet Summer Memories for the Cold Winter Months

By Wendy Moyer

If you've ever spent part of July or August just kicking back and relaxing in Adirondack chairs the odds are that you now have some sweet summer memories that you can call on to help get you through the cold winter months. If you've been so lucky, when you close your eyes do you envision picnics by the lake, vacations by the shore, or perhaps a barbeque in your garden?

I can still smell the scent of pine needles and visualize the dark green painted Adirondack chairs that were scattered about a Catskill Mountain resort that my grandparents used to spend the summers at oh so many years ago. What is it about these simple, wooden slated over sized chairs that make them so appealing? Why have they withstood the test of time? Why have they been so thoroughly enjoyed by so many people for more than a century?

Perhaps it's because Adirondack furniture is exceptionally comfortable. It boasts a simple yet elegant design that was originally fabricated from a single plank of wood.
And its durability is almost legend. Anyone who has invested in a set of Adirondack furniture is no doubt pleased with their long term value. Perhaps that is why the Adirondack chair has become a virtual trademark of cottage and wilderness life while it has pretty much achieved icon status.

Interestingly enough, although the design has remained the same since Thomas Lee built the first one in 1903 while vacationing in Westport, New York, the materials used to build it have evolved over time. Although you can still buy these deeply raked back "Westport Chairs" made out of hemlock, they're now also available in woods such as teak and cedar along with other traditional hardwoods and soft woods., And plastic as well as polywood chairs, swings, sliders, and more have recently joined the fray.

Polywood Adirondack chairs are rather amazing. These chairs are not like the flimsy, light plastic chairs of yore that could blow away in a stiff breeze and end up floating in your swimming pool.

Poly wood chairs feel as solid as they look and are available in virtually any color of the rainbow. These hefty chairs, although pricier than their plastic antecedents, can literally last a lifetime. Although they're essentially made from recycled plastic they actually have the look and feel of wood.

Here's a thought. No matter what time of the year it is, if you're looking to spruce up your garden or patio, why not consider investing in Adirondack chairs? That way, when winter does arrive, you too will have wonderful memories to help keep you warm.
