How To Achieve The Perfect Abs

By Terry Leslie
Sep 9, 2009
At some point in their lives, everyone has battled against a weight problem of some description or another.

Everyone has dreamed of achieving that six pack of bulging abs, that super-cool washboard look. It seems simple - do a load of sit-ups and leg crunches and build the muscles - that's all there is to it, right?

Unfortunately not. Everyone has those abs - they are a muscle that everyone possesses in some shape or another. The problem often occurs when they are buried beneath a layer of fat.

The key comes in getting rid of that fat to accentuate the musculature beneath. A thousand sit-ups a day will certainly develop those muscles, but if you can't see them, there's little point.

There are a multitude of exercises you can do that will build the elusive abdominal muscles - exercises that are designed to strengthen and tone those very muscles. But to get rid of the fat surrounding them is probably the starting point for many of us.

To lose this body fat, we are often told to eat low-fat foods. However, there is a danger here in that these low-fat foods do not often contain the vital vitamins and minerals that our body needs in order to function properly.

Also, these foods can sometimes contain ingredients that do not promote the burning off of excess body fat. The key to avoiding this is to choose foods that will give you enough nutrition whilst at the same time reducing your fat intake.

Proper nutrition is vital. You need to consume the right kinds of foods to ensure that your metabolic rate increases throughout the day, causing you to burn off the calories and also the excess fat - even when you are at rest. By choosing a nutritional and low-fat diet, you can achieve the best results in getting rid of that excess body fat.

Exercise, also, is vitally important. If you are concentrating on burning off fat around your midriff, then concentrate on cardio-vascular exercises that will increase your heart-rate and reduce fat:

1. running, jogging or walking
2. Aerobics
3. stairmaster

Regular exercise - 30 to 60 minutes a day - incorporating one or more of the above will drastically reduce your body fat content. Interval training, where you challenge your cardio-vascular system in different ways within the same workout, can also be great for reducing fat.

Remember that you can achieve those perfect abs - in fact if you have been exercising those muscles on a regular basis, then you probably already have them. The secret is to expose them - get rid of that layer of fat, and voila!
