MLS Tickets - Real Salt Lake 1, San Jose 1

By Brent Warnken
Sep 10, 2009
The San Jose Earthquakes (3-8-4) had a chance to not only defeat Real Salt Lake, but also had the chance to get out of the Western Conference basement. But that chance quickly disappeared after San Jose redirected a shot in their own net, and had to settle for a 1-1 tie with RSL. Salt Lake extended their unbeaten streak to a franchise-record tying five games. Get MLS tickets and see RSL continue their streak this season. San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon said it was a tough game. He continued to say he thought everything was going according to plan until that unfortunate goal went in. Arturo Alvarez scored his fifth goal of the season in the 63rd minute for San Jose. The club registered just its second road point of the year.

The Earthquakes played poorly most of the game, but started attacking early in the second half. Alvarez was all alone at the top of the box when he received a pass from Pablo Campos. The forward nailed a shot from 15 yards out between diving Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando and the post. As the game went on, RSL (5-6-5) couldn't get one past Cannon and it looked like Alvarez's goal would be the difference. RSL's Fabian Espindola was taken down by San Jose's Brandon McDonald from behind while Espindola was running down the sideline with the ball in the 77th minute. After Espindola hit the ground, he gave a hard kick to the back of McDonald's legs and received a red card for the foul play.

San Jose thought they had the game wrapped up, but in the second minute of stoppage time, RSL caught their defense off guard. While Yura Movsisyan headed towards the net, San Jose's Chris Leitch tried to get in the way, but instead, the ball ricocheted off him and over goalkeeper Cannon's dive for an easy RSL goal. The goal prevented San Jose from winning their first road game and ending a 16-match road winless streak dating back to a 2-0 triumph at Columbus on June 7, 2008. The Earthquakes remain in last place in the Western Conference and are one point behind seventh-place FC Dallas. Cannon gave the opposition credit. He said even when they were a man down, the club kept fighting and fighting.

The goalkeeper continued to say while his club had the man advantage, RSL seemed like they had more guys on the field. The disappointing part of the game was that the Earthquakes couldn't kill off the game a man up. RSL escaped with a point and improved to 2-0-3 in its last five matches. A win would have propelled them past the Colorado Rapids into fourth place in the Western Conference. Instead, RSL remains one point behind the Rapids in the standings. RSL midfielder Ned Grabavoy expressed his frustration when he said his team has good players and they should be able to get results. During the game, the referee not only ejected Espindola, he also issued six yellow cards to San Jose and one to RSL.
