Dave Matthews Band Tickets - DMB Closes Day Two of Outside Lands
Dave Matthews Band capped off day two of this year's Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park on Saturday, August 29, delivering a powerful two-and-half-hour set sprinkled with songs from DMB's latest album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. The band kicked off its set just as the San Francisco fog began to roll in at 7:30, with new song "Why I Am," after which point the band's namesake, Dave Matthews, told the crowd, "I saw a band that I liked yesterday called the Dodos. I like the Dodos." As DMB drummer carter Beauford began to ready "Don't Drink the Water," Matthews danced around on stage and announced, "I'm a little bit excited, I got a little shouty, and now I'm a little raspy. You look beautiful this evening, San Francisco. What's that scent you're wearing, eau de weed?"
The band went on to play "You & Me," "Ants Marching" and "Two Step," which featured a cameo by the Black Eyed Peas Fergie and Will.i.am. The true highlight of DMB's Outside Lands performance, however, came when special guest and pedal steel guitar great Robert Randolph took the stage for a rendition of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower." Dave Matthews Band also covered Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You (Flea Time Be Mice Elf Again)," which closed the show at 10pm. DMB's festival gigs aren't mere one-off shows, as the band is currently in the midst of touring North America in support of Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. The tour began with a sold-out performance at New York's Madison Square Garden on April 14, during which the famous frontman asked the crowd, "Who starts a tour at Madison Square Garden?" thus proving his everyman quality has remained intact despite the massive popularity of DMB. The band's seventh album, Big Whiskey has been hailed one of DMB's best efforts yet, and the frontman agrees. Prior to the album's release, Matthews told Rolling Stone, "This is a good record. Even people who don't like Dave Matthews Band are going to like this record-and if they don't, then they just don't like music."
The album's quirky title pays tribute to the late DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Moore tragically died from complications stemming from an ATV accident last August and the band named the album as such because, according to Matthews who said in an interview with Rolling Stone, "When he [Moore] used to say something was the sh** or something was awesome, he'd say it was 'the Groogrux.'" As for Big Whiskey, the band was charmed by a homeless man caught loitering outside their studio asking for money to buy "big whiskey!" Moore's place on stage has been filled by brass players Jeff Coffin and Rashawan Ross, joining the lineup already comprised of Matthews, Beauford, guitarist Tim Reynolds and bassist Stefan Lessard.
