MLS Tickets - Houston 1, Kansas City 0
After Kei Kamara scored his game-winning goal in the first half of the Houston Dynamo's 1-0 triumph over the Kansas City Wizards, he donated a glove and did a Michael Jackson-style dance in tribute of the late King of Pop. Get MLS tickets and see Kamara celebrate a goal. He scored on Mike Chabala's first career assist. The forward told the press he was disappointed to see Michael's gone, but he felt like celebrating the moment. He continued to say he use to dance like Michael when he was a little kid growing up in Africa. The soccer player used to enter talent shows and display his moves, so Kamara had to bring that one out after he scored the only goal.
Houston (9-3-4) extended their Western Conference lead to four points over Chivas USA. They broke a two-match winless streak with their victory against Kansas City. Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad made three saves for his eighth shutout of the year, giving him the MLS lead over Chivas' Zack Thornton. The Wizards (5-6-4) controlled the game early, with three scoring opportunities in the first 11 minutes. Houston scored in the 18th minute of the game. Dynamo's Corey Ashe sent a long pass to Chabala, who wasted no time in connecting with Kamara in front of the net. The forward outmaneuvered central defender Rauwshan McKenzie and then leaped up in the air and headed the ball in the net from inside the six-yard box.
During pregame, Houston coach Dominic Kinnear told Chabala to head up the field and give Corey an option. Instead, Corey played the ball to Chabala. It was a nice, easy, perfect pass, just the way the club practices it every Thursday. Chabala said he sent the ball across to Kei, who did the rest of the work. McKenzie made his first MLS start for the Wizards. He was filling in for U.S. national team defender Jimmy Conrad, who was called up to the Gold Cup squad. Unfortunately, Conrad is out with a hamstring injury that he aggravated in a 3-1 loss to Mexico. McKenzie acknowledges the fact that Huston most likely said "hey, this is his first start. Let's go after him, he is going to be very nervous."
According to Chabala, Houston's strategy was to attack the center backs and make it hard for them. He added that it was McKenzie's first game and Huston wanted to give them a handful. The Wizards had two late opportunities to tie the game, but they failed to convert on them. In the 83rd minute, Josh Wolff's header hit the ground pretty hard and shot back up and hit the underside of the crossbar. The ball bounced around in front of the goal, but Abe Thompson's attempt at the rebound did not have a chance and sailed wide. Kansas City forward Claudio Lopez hammered a free kick from outside the penalty area and missed the net by inches. Kansas City coach Curt Onalfo said he thought his club would bury one of the two scoring opportunities they had late in the game.
