If you're thinking of eating healthier, there are a lot of things you can do to. While a good diet and good exercise are the main ways to beat the cholesterol, you may still be a bit confused by the whole proposition. If you've done a little bit of reasoning, you've already discovered that fruits and vegetables are great ways to combat rising cholesterol counts, but what you might not be aware of is the fact that some are better than others. Even fruits and vegetables have their superstars in terms of reducing cholesterol levels, and as you will see, some of them aren't so great.

In terms of fighting cholesterol, leafy green vegetables are a good bet all around. Not only are leafy greens wonderful for the body in terms of fat, they are also very tasty. There is no reason to restrict yourself to iceberg lettuce, however. Consider trying a salad made with a mixture of Romaine lettuce, mustard greens and spinach. These are all terrific leafy green vegetables that are not only great for you, but taste great as well!

When consuming vegetables, it is important to remember that some vegetables are not as good for you as others. Any roots or tubers, unless you have looked them up and discovered that they are okay, tend to be less good for you in the long run than leafy greens. Taro and potatoes are two vegetables that may hinder more than they help with regards to keeping your cholesterol down. Both of these foods are quite delicious, but more often than not, they tend to be cooked with things like bacon fat and large amounts of butter, both of which are anathema to a low cholesterol diet.

There are a variety of fruits that are very good for lowering cholesterol, but keep in mind that like anything else, they should be moderated. Fruits like watermelons, apples and guava can be consumed in a limited fashion, and when consumed in moderation are quite good for keeping your cholesterol down. Do keep in mind that while these fruits tend to be fairly low in cholesterol, they are also quite high in sugar. If you have issues with diabetes or another imbalance that is affected by sugar, you will want consult with your doctor before you start pressing these foods into active rotation on your menu.

Also keep an eye out for fruits which are high in calories like grapes and mangoes. While these sweet treats can be great for a snack on the run, try not to depend on them so much, because they are quite high in fat and can actually hurt you in your quest for a lower cholesterol diet.

It's easy to eat well; just be aware of what you are putting in your system.
