Discovering Rural High-Speed Internet

By Taylor Jensen

Living in a rural area can definitely have its advantages. You're away from the constant hustle-and-bustle of city life; the nearest house to yours is most likely about a mile away, maybe even more.

In some remote areas there is such beautiful scenery that there's no question why people prefer to live there than anywhere else. It can truly be breathtaking and so relaxing, even if you sometimes feel a little disconnected from the rest of the world. If you like the quiet life, the country is definitely the place to be.

A few years ago while living in a very small town with no more than 600 people, I enjoyed a nice, remote, quiet life after working in a fast-paced environment with a lot of people around. Although it was only about 50 miles away from my office, it was amazing how much of a difference driving over a mountain could make.

The differences ranged from great Internet access and cell phone reception; three grocery stores within a 10 mile distance; and several shopping areas to choose from to not so great cell phone reception; one grocery store that was only open until 9 pm; and Internet access that was practically non-existent. Rural Internet wasn't really heard of, and you could bet that rural high-speed Internet was definitely not a popular phrase around town.

A dilemma came about one day when I needed to access the Internet. Fortunately there was a neighbor that had a connection that was pretty incredibly fast for being out in a rural area. In all honesty, it was one of the fastest types of Internet access that I had ever experienced up to that point.

I asked them how they were able to have such a quick connection in such a remote area. They explained that they were able to access the Internet via satellite. So of course I had to know more about satellite dish Internet. Who knew that it would really be possible to access the Internet through a satellite dish in the comfort of your own home out in a secluded area?

These neighbors explained that they had to have this type of connection since they did some business out of their home. They researched different ways they could have a fast connection and high-speed satellite Internet was their best bet living in a rural area.

Apparently satellite Internet could be accessed anywhere you were whether it was in the city or in the country. I definitely liked the sound of that. No more driving 50 miles to the nearest town to access the Internet for a few minutes. It's unbelievable how much you can save in gas when you don't have to worry about that!
