Glyconutrients May Help You Give Up Smoking

Aug 18, 2007
Each year cigarette smoking is responsible for thirty percent of all deaths in the United States. This means nearly four hundred thousand deaths a year are caused by cigarette smoking. This far exceeds all the deaths attributed to car accidents, homicide, suicide, illegal drug use, and alcohol use combined.

In those diagnosed with lung cancer, smoking was found to be linked to eighty percent of cases and smoking responsible for one third of all cancer deaths. It causes a quarter of all fatal heart attacks and eighty-five percent of deaths after suffering from chronic obstructive heart disease are recognized as being linked directly to smoking tobacco.

None of us is safe from the effects of tobacco. Even if we don't smoke, we can be inhaling passive smoke while in the presence of those who do. Passive smoking is considered equally as dangerous and causes twenty percent of all lung cancers in the US.

Smoking is becoming more common amongst older children and teenagers. A quarter of fifteen year olds are reported to be regular smokers. There is a higher rate amongst girls. Eventually, nutritional status may be affected because smoking adds to the free radical load in the body.

A particularly susceptible situation exists in those teenagers, who are dieting and smoking, to help manage their hunger and weight. In this case, nutrient intakes may be insufficient to offer defense against the harmful free radicals in cigarette smoking. For this reason, if you have a teenager who smokes and you haven't managed to persuade them to stop, it would be wise to provide them with a vitamin C supplement.

In adults, it is considered that a similar proportion of men and women smoke. Some have said that addiction to tobacco may be more difficult to overcome than addiction to cocaine or heroin.

Convincing subjects to stop smoking can result in a considerable declining risk in their heart disease. This is because when a person smokes, free radicals enter the body and add to the course of the disease by causing peroxidation of lipids. These changed lipids are transported by the macrophages in the blood vessel wall and contribute to fatty streaks.

A further possible effect of smoking is lower oxygen carrying capacity of the red blood cells. Because of high levels of carbon monoxide, this can intensify ischaemia in the tissues fed by narrowed blood vessels.

Dietary intake studies also demonstrate that smokers are inclined to eat poorer diets and eat lower levels of antioxidants from fruit, which multiplies the risks from free radicals.

In an ideal world, we would be free from all the dangers of passive smoking and legislation is making it easier, by prohibiting smoking in some public places.

Glycobiology offers hope to smokers and passive smokers with monosaccharides in the form of a glyconutritional supplement. There is evidence to support this in a study, which gave glucose tablets to smokers. They reported a significant reduction in the urge to smoke. This therefore indicates a link between cigarette smoking and monosaccharide deficiency.
