You Know What Really Grinds My Gears? Link Exchanges!

By Donny Wells
Sep 13, 2009
Well I'm back. And this time, what really grinds my gears are link exchanges. It seems like they are everywhere these days. People joining programs that exchange links with other websites to increase their traffic and page rankings. Well I'm here to tell you that it's doesn't work. And it will most likely work against you than for you. Yes, you may get a couple of free clicks here and there from the sites that you've partnered with. Definitely not as exciting as the time we found that chicken egg with three yokes. But if your goal is to increase page rank, then this is a program you should really stay away from.

Most of us know how link exchanges work. But for those who don't here's the 101 round-about. You join a site for free that most likely has link or link trade/exchange in the title or description. Now some sites are from and some do cost money. Then of course you would post your webpages information, title, description and so on. Then you an go around and look for other sites you would like to link to, or people would find you. After both of you agree to link to each other, you then post their link on your webpage and then they do the same. The internet temporary tattoo.

Now this seems like a perfect business transaction. Maybe their website will drive some traffic to yours. And maybe yours will drive traffic to theirs. But when it comes to trying to rank in search engines, search engines like Google don't see this as a viable link to help you rank and in the long run may even hurt you. When linking or trying to link to other sites, you don't not want to do a link swap. Google bot spiders will see this, and it won't help your site in any way. And if the sites you are linking to are spam sites or sites that have been declared spam sites (I'm not talking about the canned meat), it will most definitely hurt your rankings. You may even be black listed.

If you are out to create back links to your site from other websites. Your best bet is to go at it like a business to business sale. You should contact that webpage that you wish for your link to be included and inquire about it. If you're looking to get your back link on other sites than just independently own businesses. A good idea would be to write articles and submit them to article directories. That way you can link your webpage with your anchor text in the bio section of your article. And last but not least, it never hurts to submit your site to as many free directories as possible. You may even generate a good amount of traffic from those as well.

Last, there are websites that you do pay to register/place your link with anchor text and description that will help your SEO rankings as well. These can be very beneficial as not only will you get a site that has a great page ranking, but your site may get good placement as well. Websites I do recommend placing/purchasing are the high ranking business sites. Maybe become a member of The Better Business Bureau. They have a great page rankings and will give your website credibility as well. Some big business sites have a semi-costly yearly investment. Any other websites I advise you purchase at your discretion.

So there you have. Now you know why link exchanges grind my gears and now you know other ways to create some traffic. Perhaps you will enrich your page ranking for your website as well. Until next time!
