Never Leave The Office?

By Kazu Oda
Sep 13, 2009
Many people get in their cars after a long day at the office, loosen their ties, breathe a cleansing breath, and turn on whatever cruising music they prefer. Why these winding down rituals? Well, they are going home. They are leaving the stress of the workplace and traveling to their haven - whether that be a big city apartment, a house in the suburbs, or what have you.

Regardless of the size or shape, it is home. It is a place of respite. Imagine if you will that such a place did not exist. What if you couldn't leave the office, no matter where you went? Not a pretty picture, is it? The picture is getting bleaker thanks to VMware's servers.

VMware is utilizing a program called vSphere 4 to create this virtual desktop infrastructure. In the past, this same program has been used for the virtualization of servers and cloud computing. The CTO of VMware, Steve Herrod, explained at the 2009 VMware conference why vSphere 4 is just the program for the development of virtual desktop infrastructure. He gave three reasons.

First, he reasoned that vSphere 4 technology has the tools needed to improve both server and desktop virtualization. Next, he pointed to the technology's proven availability for disaster recovery. Finally, he argued that it is a very secure and efficient technology.

VMware is not just embarking on this new project alone, however. They have acquired a number of partners for their venture from the virtualization of servers to mobile desktop virtualization. One of these partners is Georgia-based software company, RTO. They are using RTO's Virtual Profilers technology in conjunction with its own technology to separate various components of the virtual desktop, isolating them in order to patch of improve them without impacting other components.

However, if the customer does not really need the items that Visa promotes, yet they are convinced they should have them, needless spending occurs. My guess is that the latter would be much more common than the former.

What might result from this coming "advance"? One of the side effects would likely be the increase in the number of workaholics in the world. If your office was in effect sitting in your pocket or resting on your bedside table, how tempting would it be to either catch up on some work or to use every waking moment to climb the corporate ladder?

They have followed the current technological trends and jumped on the opportunity to be among the first to meet the ever-increasing need for mobile desktop virtualization. They have improved the infrastructure of servers, and they now attempt to enter the world of desktop virtualization with a bang.
