Correcting The Corrections Department

By Matthew McKernan
Sep 15, 2009
The United States of America has more people in prison than other industrialized nation in the world, and though this has been said many times there are few answers on how to deal with this issue. Some argue that the prison system turns small time criminals into street demons who come out stronger, harder, and better connected. Others say more prisons are no different than building more schools or roads, because it is just keeping up with the needs of the infrastructure. Now while the best and brightest among us debate what to do tens of thousands of angry violent terrorists, drug dealers, and gang members wait for an opportunity to strike. A small but dedicated and brave forces of corrections officers watch over some of society's worst and they need more help.

The job of a corrections officer isn't easy to say the least and the men and women who dawn the uniform have to be police officers, detectives, counselors, and diplomats during the course of their shift. No area of law enforcement is easy, but in the prison system you have direct contact with a variety of criminals. One family friend who works as an officer told me that in the pod he is assigned too the prisoners include violent offenders charged with drugs assault, and one career criminal who is also a power lifer. While he feels most are trying to get their act together he has to be ever vigilant, and he knows at any moment one can change their mind.

Take for example twenty-seven year old Curtis Allgier a life long skinhead and white supremacist who is covered in white pride tattoos that was doing fifteen years for burglary, forgery, and escape. Going home to his wife and kids was very possibility, but one day for reasons nobody will understand accept for maybe Allgier the prisoner murdered a guard. It was a routine trip to a Salt Lake City area hospital where Allgier allegedly disarmed and killed corrections department officer Stephen Anderson a sixty year old veteran of the force with over twenty years experience.

Armed and dangerous Allgier escaped in a stolen vehicle and stopped off an Arby's, but that would be his last mistake that day. The easily recognizable fugitive ran into fast food restaurant only to be confronted by Eric Fullerton a fifty-nine year old army veteran. Fullerton may have only wanted to grab something to eat, but that didn't stop him from taking on the younger stronger punk who he took down and disarmed. While Fullerton escaped with only a minor injury Allgier was quickly arrested by the police.

How do you prepare yourself to deal with people who will kill for little or no reason? By being prepared for the worst and training in real self defense techniques. You may qualify with firearms or other weapons provided, but don't let your training stop there. Work with your peers so you know how to work as a team, and use the tools you do have to their fullest. If the training that is provided isn't adequate go out and find it on your own, and even if your institution has a good training program there is always more to learn. It is hard to be watchful for eight hours or more, but if your not you might not make it home. Your training is what gives you the edge, so never stop training, and watch your back.
