Reciprocal Linking - Key To Page Rank
If you are brainstorming effective ways to market your website that won't take a lot of money to get started, then you've probably run across a lot of information about getting and exchanging links to your site.
It is true that the number of incoming links, meaning links on other sites that connect to your site, is one of the most important factors that search engine spiders take into account when determining where your site should fit amongst other related sites in a search. Of course, it is most desirable to be on the very first page of search results for any keyword search, as this is usually the only page that surfers look at. So that leaves the question, what exactly is reciprocal linking and how can you make it happen for your site?
Put most simply, reciprocal linking involves the creation of a banner or text link that is listed on your site, that when clicked on, will take people to another site. What makes these links reciprocal, is that you usually only create them for sites that have also agreed to add a similar link to your site somewhere amongst their pages.
Before you go out and create links to every site that is even remotely related to yours, keep a few simple guidelines about reciprocal linking in mind. First off, a reciprocal link is really a statement of commitment to the other site, since you are basically providing a way for people to leave your site to visit another site; you are providing them with an opportunity for increased traffic. Be sure to monitor your reciprocal links very carefully, as it is not uncommon for some links to get erased or buried when sites get redesigned. The last thing you want is to be providing a link to someone's site when they are not returning the favor.
Another thing to keep in mind about reciprocal linking is that it is possible to overdo it. Think about how you would feel if you navigated to a site that sounded interesting, only to find yourself bombarded with ads and text links that were so distracting you couldn't even find the content you came looking for in the first place. Don't frustrate your users by piling a bunch of unrelated links onto your homepage. Select carefully, and only add reciprocal links to sites that will be of great value to your users and that will honor the reciprocal nature of the link.
