Keyword Research - Knowing Your Competition
If you have created a website or blog and are interested in drawing large amounts of traffic to it for revenue purposes, it is absolutely essential that you engage in keyword research so that you can create content that is as attractive as possible to the search engines. If your content uses keywords correctly, it is much more likely to appear near the top of consumer searches in the popular search engines, meaning that consumers are much more likely to click through and visit your site. If yours is a relatively small online business, than it is even more important that you do your homework when it comes to keywords, so that valuable time and resources aren't wasted.
If you are setting out on a campaign to optimize your site to be noticed by the search engines, than keyword research is the first place that you should start. Without conducting this research you are far more likely to target the wrong keywords, or to target keywords that are already dominated by well funded sites that you can't possibly compete with. Targeting these already competitive keywords means that your site will be buried in the search results, and your efforts will have been for nothing since your audience is unlikely to find you.
Although the concept of keyword searching might seem simple to you, it is very unlikely that you can guess what the most popular search terms for finding your site are without first conducting some keyword research. The first step in conducting this kind of research is slow and careful brainstorming. First, sit down and try to think of all the possible terms that a person could enter into a search engine to search for the products or information your site has to offer. If your site sells red wagons, these terms could be everything from toys, kids' wagons, radio flyer, and little red wagon, to toy wagons, yard toys for children, and more.
Once you've come up with a lengthy list of possible keywords, the next step in keyword research is to show the list to your friends and family for their input. Ask them the same question that you asked yourself, "What words would you enter if you were looking for this product?" Now that you have a good list of strong keywords to start with, consult with one of the popular keyword research tools and compare its suggestions with the ones that you've already come up with. Keep in mind the tool will devise its list with popular searches, and competition in mind.
