Open A Restaurant and Be in the 10% that Succeed

By Jimmy Cox

Are you thinking about how to open restaurant? If you are I want to let you in on a secret . . . you are not alone. Opening a restaurant is one of the most popular businesses that people want to start. Competition is tough and so many restaurants fail within the first year. It's a dog eat dog world (excuse the pun).
But I don't say all this to deflate you or to put you off the idea, just to impress upon you how important it is to get every aspect that affects the success of your business right. Here's a list of a few pointers you need to get right to make your restaurant stand out from the competition:

1. Restaurant Concept
2. Location
3. Food Menu
4. Get the Right People on Board
5. Marketing Your Restaurant

1. Restaurant Concept

Knowing what kind of restaurant you are and focusing on these key aspects that differentiates your restaurant from the thousands out there is very important. You should try and fill a gap in the market, find your niche, your audience and go out of your way to satisfy these customers. Don't try and please everyone - this is a cardinal sin.

2. Location

This is so important. Find a location that has high levels of foot traffic and areas where there are good shops and stores around that fit with your clientele. Say there was a yoga studio near by an organic food restaurant might be a good idea. Be in a neighbourhood that fits your pricing level.

3. Food Menu

Don't try and do to much with your food menu. Simple food can be the best food out there. Start small and build up your menu as you go along.

4. Get the Right People on Board

When starting a restaurant you need to get the right people on board. Think of it this way, a restaurant is only as good as its people. Think about your own dining experiences, what is it that has made you go back to places time and again. Bad service can put people off for life no matter how good the food is.

5. Marketing the Restaurant

Marketing your restaurant is such an important area to pay attention to but it can be very expensive. The best and most cost-effective way to market your restaurant is via word of mouth. Think about how you and everybody else decide where they want to eat out. Two ways spring to mind as being most prominent - when people are new to an area they might look up online restaurant reviews; but the first and foremost method people chose where to eat out is getting recommendations from friends.
