New Transplant Techniques For Hair Loss Sufferers Restores Confidence Too
Never mind beauty being in the eye of the beholder, if you are someone that suffers from hair loss, then self confidence can plummet when hair begins to thin or recede. The problem is most commonly associated with men, but females are just as likely to suffer from hair loss, and the consequences are often far more damaging. This is because balding in women is less aesthetically acceptable than in men.
The way hair loss shows in women varies greatly from men and the degree of loss can be disguised more easily. On the other hand, the treatments available for treating hair loss are more suitable for men. The two major hair restoration medications promote hair growth generally, not just on the areas that show the greatest degree of loss. A common side effect therefore is increased growth of facial and body hair, rendering these treatments unsuitable for females.
The way the degree of hair loss is measured is also scored on two different scales for men and women to reflect the pattern of hair loss. The Norwood classification is used for men. This classification shows the gradual recession of the frontal area and the crown of the head until a horseshoe shape is left. For women the degree of hair loss is measured by the Ludwig classification. This shows an increased degree of thinning at the top of the head. Rather than a small bald spot increasing in size, a larger area begins thinning and the thinning increases in severity until a similar horse shoe shape is left.
It is the tendency for the back and sides of the scalp to continue to produce healthy hair that has made treating hair loss with surgery possible. By transplanting follicles from this area, known as the donor area, to the thinning, receding or balding areas, normal hair can be restored. The transplanted follicles continue to produce hair just as they would at the back of the head to create natural and normal looking hair.
This treatment is not suitable for all causes of hair loss, and the medications available to aid the restoration are not available to women. However, it is an industry that is increasingly developing better hair restoration methods. In fact, one of the latest, which involves transplanting one hair follicle at a time is used to restore eyebrows that have been over plucked or lost due to medication or illness. The precision required for such surgery is testament to the advancement in hair restoration methods and brings us a step closer to restoring the confidence of hair loss sufferers as well as their hair.
