Houses and Apartments - Renting in Ireland

Aug 17, 2007
Looking to rent in Ireland? For the many foreigners coming to Ireland for work this may seem a daunting task, but renting a house or apartment in Ireland is much easier than you might think!

Although renting in Ireland and especially in Dublin is extremely expensive compared to other European countries, there is plenty of property available, and if you look around you should be able to find a good deal, although it most probably will not be cheap.

There are a number of good websites and real estate agents that can help you with your search, make sure to also check the bulletin boards at your work. Als, if you have found work via a recruitment agency ask them for more information.

If you are one of the many people relocating to Ireland for work in one of the many Call Centres, and already have a home of your own in Mainland Europe, you might be surprised to find that when you rent a home in Ireland it is almost always fully furnished. You will only need to bring your linen, and your clothes and personal belongings of course. You will almost always find cutlery, crockery, kitchen appliances and all necessary furniture in the house or apartment you will be renting; most houses also have a television and dishwasher.

When you sign a rental contract, which is usually for 6 - 12 months, you will be required to pay a deposit, this is almost always equivalent to 1 months rent, and will be refunded when you leave the premises, providing you have left the rental property in the state you acquired it and you have no outstanding bills.

The basic prices for renting in Dublin are:

* Bedsit: approx. 500 to 700
* 1 Bedroom Apartment: approx. 750 to 900
* 2 Bedroom Apartment: approx. 850 to 1000
* 2 Bedroom House: approx. 950 to 1150
* 3 Bedroom House: approx. 1100 to 1300
* 4-5 Bedroom House: approx. 1300 to 1600

Please note that these prices vary wildly depending on area and furnishings, the luxury properties sometimes go for 2-3 times these prices. Also, prices in other cities are much lower than these Dublin estimates.

Because of these high rental prices, most people share a house with colleagues or friends, for a bedroom in a shared house you usually pay about 350 for a single bedroom, or about 400 for a double. (Single/Double means the type of bed found in the room). Of course, the more rooms the house has, the cheaper the rent, but it can often lead to irritation as the bathrooms (usually one or two), the kitchen and the living rooms are all shared. If you are coming to Ireland alone, you can also search for rooms to rent by searching on property rental websites and checking the bulletin boards at your work.

Conclusion :
Finding a home or apartment to rent is extremely easy in Ireland; if you are coming here to work you will most likely be given two weeks in a Hotel or Bed and breakfast for the first two weeks. This is more than enough time to find a new home for your self.
