MLS Tickets - Colorado 1, Toronto FC 0
Toronto FC played at Dicks Sporting Good Park thinking that Conor Casey wouldn't be with the Colorado Rapids. Get MLS tickets and see Casey score a goal. Toronto coach Chris Cummins said he saw a report that stated Casey would be away. Instead, the coach walked in and saw Casey's name on the team sheet for the game. Casey proved to be the difference, scoring in the 51st minute to lead Colorado to a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC. The forward was supposed to be away with the U.S. team, but two impacted wisdom teeth prevented him from joining the club. He had his teeth extracted in Denver. Casey told the press he was called to the U.S. team camp, but since his teeth were infected, they had to be removed.
The forward was disappointed he could not be with the U.S. team, but had a week to rest and prepared himself for the match against Toronto. Matt Pickens registered his seventh shutout of the season and 18th of his career for the Rapids (10-7-6). Colorado has won two consecutive games and five of six at home. Casey recorded his MLS-leading 12th goal of the year. Omar Cummings passed the ball to Jacob Peterson, who then sent the ball in the air towards Casey. Casey's header sailed past goalkeeper Stefan Frei's left shoulder. The forward stated he couldn't have done it without Jacob and Omar's pass. He acknowledged that the three of them always maintain good eye contact with each other.
Give credit to Colorado's spectacular defense, which has been the best in MLS at home, allowing eight goals in 13 matches. The Rapids' offense has also been playing well; they have accumulated 10 goals in its last five home games. Toronto (8-9-7) failed to score for the fourth straight road game and was shutout for the seventh time overall this year. Cummins said somebody had to reach and work harder to score a goal for their club. The coach continued to say his team had nowhere near enough attempts on net. According to his calculation, Toronto had just one shot on target. After Casey scored the only goal in the game, Pickens denied Toronto of a goal when he gobbled up a shot by Chad Barrett from a tough angle taken from the side of the left post.
Toronto never challenged after that, and the match went from bad to worse when midfielder Amadou Sanyang received a red-card ejection in the 76th minute. Sanyang wasn't the only Toronto player to be tossed from the game. Adrian Serioux also earned a red-card ejection. Scoring chances were limited as defense dominated the scoreless first half. Colorado had three of four golden opportunities to score a goal. The best chance came in the 25th minute when Casey nailed the middle of the crossbar on a penalty kick. Frei blocked Mehdi Ballouchy's shot from the slot in the sixth minute and smothered a kick by Jacob Peterson in the 41st minute. Pickens caught Toronto's best chance when Dwayne De Rosario hammered a shot in the 10th minute. It was the one shot on target that Cummins referred to.
