Get MLS tickets and see Wolff score a pair of goals. Kansas City played an excellent match by fighting off two second-half goals. The club snapped a seven-match winless streak. Wizards' coach Peter Vermes said the win was great, but he wants his team's performance to improve in the next game.
The coach noted that if his team's performance gets better, the Wizards will continue to give themselves a good chance to win points. It was Kansas City's first win since a 3-1 victory over New England (9-7-6) on June 13. The Revolution slipped back to third place in the Eastern Conference; they are tied with D.C. United. The Revolution still have two matches in hand.
Claudio Lopez scored the first goal for the Wizards (6-10-6) in the third minute after Wolf seized on Darrius Barnes' error and fed a cross for the Argentine to finish past Revolution goalkeeper Brad Knighton. Wolff told the press that his team has not scored a goal in a while. The forward continued to say that the goal was a big one for his team because it gave his club some confidence. Lopez's goal ended the Wizards' 426-minute scoreless drought. Vermes stated that the first goal took the pressure off his team. He acknowledged that the Revolution would have to attack to get back into the game. Things went from bad to worse for New England in the 23rd minute when Shalrie Joseph was sent off after a studs-up challenge on the Wizards midfielder Jack Jewsbury.
Knighton proclaimed that was not how his team wanted to start the game. The goalkeeper said they discussed what they needed to accomplish before the game, and going down 1-0 was not part of the discussion. Wolff's run to the byline and cross in front of the goal forced New England defender Jay Heaps into conceding an own goal in the 29th minute. Kansas City took a 2-0 lead and everybody thought it was a commanding one. The Revolution bounced back after the break and cut the deficit to 2-1 when Edgaras Jankauskas hammered a goal in the 64th minute. But Wolff soon scored a magnificent goal after he tucked home a loose ball that got away from Knighton. Knighton was trying to claim a pass from Lopez near the goal post.
Knighton accepted responsibility. The goalkeeper said he went down and "did not get all of it." He added that the play was his fault. Revolution substitute Kheli Dube scored the second goal for his club after heading home Sainey Nyassi's cross in the 81st minute. But Wolff was just too much to handle in this contest as he scored for the second time, ending the Revolution's three-game winning streak. Knighton stated it would have been nice to pick up three points in the match. The goalkeeper expressed that his club can't dwell on the loss. He knows his team will have to regroup next week when they take on Chivas. The goalkeeper said they have to "come out firing."
