St. Louis Cardinals Tickets- Carpenter and the Cards Beat Brewers 3-0
Chris Carpenter kept throwing strike after strike. Get St. Louis Cardinals tickets and see Carpenter strike out the side in the third inning. The right-hander pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a clean double to Jody Gerut in the fifth inning, and struck out 10 as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0. Carpenter told the press his goal was to get strike one, strike two, and strike three as fast as he could, or get the batter to put the ball into play so his teammates could make a play. The right-hander stated he was not wasting pitches; he wanted to go after his opponents. Carpenter (16-3) did just that. The starting pitcher won his 11 straight decision and leads the majors with 2.16 ERA.
Carpenter earned his first shutout in three years, and allowed just two balls out of the infield. Although the starting pitcher won the NL Cy Young Award in 2005, he said he wasn't thinking about winning it for a second time. Carpenter said it was the least of his concerns. In 2005, the right-hander finished the season with an impressive 21-5 record. He stated that it would be "super awesome and fun and nice" to win another Cy Young Award, but he would rather get to the playoffs and win the World Series. Carpenter matched the best game of his career, having pitched a one-hitter in 2005 for the Cardinals against the Blue Jays. He walked two in that contest.
Milwaukee manager Ken Macha acknowledged that his club didn't present a threat to Carpenter and the Cardinals. Brewers' outfielder Frank Catalanotto flied out in the fourth inning and Gerut doubled down the left-field line with one out in the fifth inning. Those were the lone balls the Brewers hit to the outfield. Gerut had a disappointed look on his face when he said he kept his team out of the books. The outfielder knew Carpenter challenged his club. He proclaimed that he "throws strikes with electric stuff, its good stuff." Gerut was hoping Carpenter would make a mistake because most of the time the ace pitcher zips the ball right by the batters.
Cardinals' first baseman Albert Pujols hit a two-run double in the fifth inning. The slugger doubled again and scored in the seventh inning for the NL Central leaders. The red hot Cardinals have been on a roll. It was the team's 15th consecutive time they won the first game of a series. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said it was a sign of consistency. The manager revealed that his team is ready to play and they have a lot of weapons to play with. Tony stated that his team has been mentally prepared for their games, and St Louis has also been pushing themselves in every series.
Carpenter pitched his first shutout since beating Houston on September 11, 2006. The pitcher missed most of the last two seasons due to a right elbow injury. In July 2007, he had Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has beaten Milwaukee twice in the last five days. Tony said his pitcher has the ability to change his looks to a hitter. The manager added that he can face the same club every week and pitch differently since "he has all those pitches."
