Cleveland Indians Tickets - Indians Beat the Twins 3-1

By Brent Warnken
Sep 18, 2009
Michael Brantley crushed a tiebreaking single with two outs in the seventh inning, helping David Huff and the Cleveland Indians defeat the Minnesota Twins 3-1. Get Cleveland Indians tickets and see Brantley head home. The loss dropped the Twins seven games behind Detroit in the AL Central. Twins first baseman Michael Cuddyer said every team goes through a losing streak, but unfortunate for Minnesota it's coming at a bad time. Brantley hit a grounder to right field, which brought in Luis Valbuena from second and gave the Indians a 2-1 lead. Brantley was caught in a rundown when Cuddyer cut off the throw home, but was able to tag second safely. The center fielder scored on Asdrubal Cabrera's double.

The Indians took two of the three from the Twins, hurting their chances of tracking down Detroit. Although Minnesota won 12 of their previous 17, they began their day six behind the Tigers. Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire acknowledged that the team is struggling at the plate, but said their pitching "is going along pretty decent." The manager wants the team to do well in both departments if the Twins want to make a run at the postseason. Huff (9-7) gave up one run and two hits in seven innings to earn his fourth win in his last five starts. The rookie had not pitched since August 26th because Cleveland cut back on his workload.

Huff stated that he felt strong and had "good command" during the game. The left-hander noted that he was in unchartered territory. A year ago, Huff's season finished September 1st. The starting pitcher said he was not physically tired, but admitted he was mentally drained. Brantley and Huff are two youngsters who have the opportunity to play for a rebuilding Indians ball club. Cleveland have traded away many veterans and are without injured All-Star outfielder Grady Sizemore for the rest of the season. Gardenhire gave Brantley a lot of credit for putting some good swings against his club. Minnesota's manager tipped his hat to the center fielder and said he was a nice looking player. Gardenhire also complemented Cabrera by saying he was one of the better players in the league.

Cleveland manager Eric Wedge likes what he has seen, too. Wedge said Brantley impacted the game. He was acquired by the Indians in July 2008 in the trade that sent CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. Wedge summed up the game for Brantley when he said his center fielder did a great job staying "in that rundown, he knocked one in, scored another, and was a separator." The 22-year-old Brantley stated that he tried to stick with the fundamentals of the game, especially with a tied ball game going into the seventh inning. The confident outfielder proclaimed he was looking for a good pitch so he could put a good swing on the ball. As for his impressive rundown, he said he planned it that way so the run would score there. Brantley realized the rundown was a lot of fun to do, but said he was lucky this time.
