Tips For Cell Phone Longevity

By Taylor Jensen
Sep 18, 2009
I'm probably a lot like you in that I use my cell phone a lot. I'm tethered to it. I use it for phone calls, text messaging, picture taking, and more than all of these things combined, to know what time it is.

As I took mine out of my pocket this morning, I accidentally dropped it on the sidewalk. Truth is I do that a lot. Overall, cell phones are really quite durable, and very well made. Most of the time, they don't break simply from being dropped. Occasionally, however, bad luck happens.

When I picked it up the screen was blank. I hoped the shock of the crash landing had only knocked it silly. I tried repeatedly to power it back on, but no dice. Trust me when I tell you I know what a dead cell phone looks like. This is my third such mishap this year. I took out and replaced the battery (that has helped before, too). Sadly, my carelessness had done in yet another phone.

My immediate reaction was laced with some colorful words best not repeated. You might know where I'm coming from. After a few minutes, and after admitting that my immature outburst wouldn't bring my phone back to life, I faced the cold, hard fact that I needed a new phone. How else am I supposed to tell the time?

From past experience - twice this year alone - I know that new cellular phones are readily available at any number of retail outlets. This works in my favor because I'm a guy who benefits from convenient, inexpensive replacements.

Figuring my best buy will probably be had at one of the large, nationwide retailers located not too far from my house; I head out bravely, not knowing what time it was.

One really great thing about shopping for a new cell phone is the seemingly endless selections. I can spend hours checking out all the different shapes and colors, buttons and touch screens, sliders and flips. It's like a cell phone buffet, and I never seem to get my fill of gadgets and gizmos. The technology stuffed into such small packaging is really quite impressive.

I discover I can get a really great phone that will hold pretty much all the MP3 music in the world. This is great for serious music lovers. I also see that I can have one with a built-in video camera that will stream whatever I'm shooting directly to the internet. Tempting. Very tempting.

In the end, however, I go with what I know, and replace my broken phone with the exact same model. I love all the bells and whistles, but what I really prefer is something familiar, like looking at my phone to see what time it is.
