When it comes down to it there is a lot of variety in dolls. Dolls that are toys (some are now collectibles); dolls that are made to resemble comic books and movie characters or cartoon characters; dolls that are made for the purpose of collecting; dolls made for antiquity value.

The doll has existed for a long time through history and are still popular even in the computer age, as collectibles and as toys. First dolls were around in ancient times and were made from any of the following: wood, clay or animal fur.

Only one doll has been found to date back to pre-historic times, and this one was located in Babylon. However, they have been found to date back to Roman times and in ancient Egypt and Greece as they have been found in children's graves.

In the sixteenth century dolls were popularly made from a variety of wood types and then in the eighteenth century paper mache and wax became popular in combination with wood materials. Porcelain then came into fashion and this tends to be the choice of material for those dolls with high financial value - the antique-type of doll.

These days, modern dolls are made from porcelain, plastics and a variety of other materials. There are dolls to resemble cartoon or comic characters. Others are made to showcase fashion styles. And then there are dolls to resemble characters from films, such as Edward and Bella in the Twilight movie. You can find a doll to suit almost any taste.

The most well known is the Barbie doll which were introduced in the late 1950's. Even so, they are very popular to this day. Initially they were introduced for very young age girls to young teenage, but now they can be found to fulfill all age groups.

Dolls are very popular as collectibles. Some people have porcelain doll collections, while others may have Barbie collectibles. They are also still popular as a child's toy even though the likes of computer games offer stiff competition.

Which ever is your reason for buying a doll, they will always be popular and loved by all ages in every country around the globe.
