How To Figure Out What Bar Stool To Get

By John Moore

Bar stools can be a funky addition to any room. Historically relegated to the old pubs of the United Kingdom, bar stools are now a must have seating solution in many homes. You can now find bar stools in kitchens, bedrooms, and outdoor patios just to name a few places. With a little creativity a bar stool can be easily accommodated in any room of the house.

Once you've decided what room you might like to add bar stools to, now the job of figuring out how to choose a perfect style begins. There are a couple of factors to keep in mind before you make your final choice. The only limitations really are the size, and beyond that, your taste and decor will be the major influencing factors.

Once you have the theme worked out, then you need to decide what height your bar or table will be, so that you can then choose the appropriately sized bar stools. The standard bar stool height is 30". This is sized to fit appropriately with the standard bar height of 42" (or 40-44 inches). However you may decide that your kitchen is more suited for a breakfast bar height counter, in which case you will want to find a style available in the 24 inch height.

With the height of your table or bar determined you will have a final barstool height that you can go shopping with. Now you just need to browse the almost infinite number of styles and colors to find the perfect choice for your theme. A few key characteristics which will help to narrow down your options are 1) back or no back, 2) swivel or fixed, 3) wood or metal 4) cloth or leather upholstery 4) round or square shaped seats. Aside from style, one of the biggest factors for me is comfort, and having a back on my barstools is definitely the option that I tend to choose.

The final bar stool aspect to consider is what type of material will be used in the construction of the stool and whether you want the stool to be upholstered. The old fashioned stools were generally made from hard wood and heavily varnished. These are handsome barstools but perhaps a bit heavy looking for residential use. These days bar stools are made from wood, resin, poly carbonate and formed plastic.

The bar stool options available these days is so great that I don't think you could think of a bar stool style that isn't already available. If you are looking for a change from the standard dining table and chairs, a bar height table and bar stools might just be the change you are looking for. Make sure you figure out a height that suits you, and from there your choices are limitless.
