How To Get Rid of Cellulite

Aug 18, 2007
What is cellulite? Dreaded cellulite is a word we have come to fear. But what is it, and how can you get rid of it ?

Cellulite is the name given to the deposits of fatty and fibrous tissue that cause a dimpling effect on the skin, usually on the hips, thighs and buttocks of women. It is comprised of toxins and fat that accumulate within the body.

Hormonal changes in the body may also contribute to the problem and may explain the fact that it is more common in adult women than men. It really looks like lumpy skin and often looks like cottage cheese. This effect is the result of these fatty deposits beneath the skin pushing into the surface.

Who can get cellulite? Cellulite can affect men and women of any body weight and size. Between 85-98% of adult females display some degree of cellulite. It is interesting to note that of these women it is more prevalent in Caucasian females than Asian. This suggests that diet may be a significant contributing factor in the production of cellulite deposits, although actual weight management appears to be a much less contributing factor.

Although statistics may indicate heavier body types may be more susceptible to cellulite, it is not at all uncommon among lighter weight and finer framed women. While not documented as being usual, men sometimes do present the signs of cellulite.

Some contributing factors that cause this condition may include:

1. Pre-existing heredity makeup. If your parents suffered from the effects of cellulite statistics indicate that you may also have a tendency to develop it post puberty.

2. Not drinking enough water. Water helps flush toxins and waste from your body. It is recommended that you should drink 7-8 glasses a day.

3. Diet. Poor eating habits including fatty food, alcohol and caffeine. These toxins collect within fat deposits. It's interesting to note that the consumption of caffeine is a contributing cause, as effective and proven treatments of cellulite include the application or injection of caffeine into the problem areas.

4. Smoking reduces the body's circulation thus effecting blood saturation to your skin reducing elasticity.

5. Medication can disturb the body's natural processes, disturbing the purification system that is naturally in place.

The effects of cellulite - while the visual appearance of cellulite is completely undesirable, the effects of the condition often contribute to other issues apart from any particular physical health concerns, such as low self-esteem, and social interactions often become awkward or embarrassing.

How to get rid of cellulite? Good question. This skin tissue dilemma cannot be prevented, but its appearance may be reduced in a number of ways, such as :

1. Skin tone plays an important role in this process. The toning and elasticity of the skin can be enhanced with the application of remedial creams and lotions.

2. Using moisturizer every day and protecting the skin against the effects of the sun will improve the skins ability to stay firm and act against the pushing and dimpling effect created by the problem.

3. Staying fit and keeping your muscle tone in good condition also helps to lessen the visual effects of cellulite. A regular exercise routine to firm and shape problem areas also has the added benefit of improving the performance of the body's internal workings enhancing a healthy blood flow to the skin.

4. Watching what you eat and maintaining a healthy diet is essential for all aspects of your life. What you put into your body is what you get out of it. Be sure to include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Pay attention to the fat content and ingredients in the food that you eat.

Remember that there is "always food" and "sometimes food." It is interesting Asian women who are less susceptible to cellulite, eat a diet containing more fresh vegetables and very little, if any, red meat.

5. A detoxification diet - detox diets are planned to cleanse your body of toxins and speed up and enhance the metabolism, speeding up your digestion system. Most require you to eat only fresh natural food eliminating anything processed or refined.

6. Many day spas and beauty salons offer a body wrap, where a natural mixture of algae and seaweed is used in conjunction with skin hydrating lotions to improve blood circulation to the skin. This is a temporary solution in the reduction of fatty deposits and should best be considered as a treatment in addition to compliment other positive steps.

7. Injections that contain small amounts of caffeine are being used to help reduce the size of individual cellulite pockets. You can now enjoy your favorite drink in a whole new way.

8. Liposuction - an expensive cosmetic surgery treatment, not usually recommended by doctors for cellulite removal as this was developed for the treatment of deep fat.

9. Massage therapy is very popular. One massage technique is called endermologie. This uses a system of rollers and a vacuum device to manipulate the skin, effective in smoothing the appearance of cellulite and the promotion of blood circulation.

10. Specifically designed cellulite treatment creams. Some of the ingredients used in these products include green tea extract, which increases the rate at which fat is broken down; Retinol A, an extract of vitamin A that targets skin tissue and has a rejuvenating effect and algae extract, that helps to break down fat.

Unfortunately, this annoying skin condition does not go away or get better if left untreated. Sadly it is a problem that becomes more problematic with age.

The search in finding the solution to how to get rid of cellulite is continuous and seemingly endless. Right now there is no cure but there are many effective and ways to reduce the appearance of this disorder.
