What Is In Your Drinking Water, How About Rocket Fuel
What is in your drinking water? Well to really find out the truth you should either have your water tested or consult with your local water authority. They actually are required by law to send you an annual report about the contaminants present in your tap water. They are also required by law to notify you immediately of any serious contamination of your tap water.
You water report can also be viewed online. By going to the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) or the EWG Investigation websites, there are city by city reports on what is in your tap water.
Reading those websites probably won't provide much comfort. A 2003 NRDC study found that in some 19 cities, pollution and old plumbing were sometimes delivering tap water that posed serious health risk to households. Now 19 may sound like a small number but we are talking about millions of people because these cities were among the largest, most populous ones in the United States.
Here are a few of the drinking water contaminants that were found and their potential health effects:
1. Lead. Can lead to delays in infant development, kidney and high blood pressure in adults.
2. Pathogens like bacteria and waterborne parasites. These can lead to vomiting, diarrhea and diminished immune systems
3. Chlorine and its byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. Can lead to cancer and problems with the reproductive systems.
5. Other carcinogens such as arsenic, atrazine (pesticide) and of all things rocket fuel, which is present in the water of a whopping 20 million people. You would have thought that as long as you don't live close to NASA, rocket fuel contamination wouldn't have been a problem; but actually it is.
The most frightening thing about all of this is that despite these reports, these cities were for the most part, not in violation of water safety standards. The problem is that the standards set by the Environmental protection Agency (EPA) are actually low.
Therefore, you as a consumer has to take matters into your own hands and give yourself maximum protection against tap water contaminants. You do this only by acquiring a quality water purifier from a seller you can trust.
Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. There are many water purifiers on the market and the choices can be a bit confusing. However, if you know where to get the right information, (such as how to know an effective water filter and the various filtering technologies available) you can make an informed buying decision.
Don't put off this buying decision any longer because what is in your tap water, can actually kill you.
