Why Our Bodies Need Antioxidants
The benefits of antioxidants are many, including the prevention of cancers. These phytonutrients are able to protect us from other illnesses as well as many diseases. So far scientists have cataloged over nine hundred phytonutrients (phytochemicals), more are being discovered all the time and the whole area of nutrition and preventative health care is opening up. Many new compounds have been found that have very specific effects on conditions many of us suffer, pomegranates for example, contain many different properties while blueberries have compounds which affect the aging process.
Blueberries are one of the top quality fruits containing plenty of antioxidants while maintaining lower sugar content then most other fruits. Often the easiest way for people to take fruit is in juice form which is readily available all year round, some of the many benefits have been improvements in the body's capacity to heal itself and benefits to circulation. Not content with helping to prevent illness, these antioxidants also help fight disease and infection. Even the humble apple is not immune with properties to help ward of heart problems.
Acerola has one of the highest concentrates of vitamin C of any other fruit. It has 32 times the amount of vitamin C over orange juice. This is considered nature's highest form of vitamin C in its purest state. We all know the disasters that can entail from consuming synthetic vitamin C. Our bodies can not utilize this synthetic type and many health complications including birth defects have been the result. Is this a chance you are willing to take by not making sure you are ingesting the all natural form? I for one am not willing to risk this for neither myself nor my family.
Phytochemicals which can be an aid to our health are even contained in citrus fruits. The particular combination of properties found in tart cherries offers an anti-inflammatory benefit, which is appreciated by those suffering from joint pain caused by arthritis, gout, fibromyalgia or over-exertion. We have all been informed of the essential health benefits of certain vitamins and minerals but these are being looked at in depth as well. Other types of antioxidants are found in mulberries, blackberries and blueberries, called resveratrol, Phytoalexins have anti-viral and anti-fungal properties.
The benefits of these extend too many of the conditions which are found to be more prevalent as we age. For example, heart disease, Alzheimer's, blood pressure and stroke. The humble tomato has also been under scrutiny with benefits it has guarding against certain cancers and heart problems. There are a number of ways you can use tomatoes to gain the greatest antioxidant benefit from them and these include pureed, juice concentrate and sauce. Nature has also blessed the watermelon with phytonutrients. There is no longer any reason to neglect fruit form your diet as it could literally save your life.
