How Pure Is Distilled Water? The Purest If You Know What To Do
How pure is distilled water? Well, it is widely considered to be the purest drinking water available. Consequently, many households have a counter top device that provides distilled water for drinking.
Now, you might be thinking that it is not necessary to have such a device because after all, the United States has one of the safest water supplies in the world. This may be true, but U.S. water supply is not without its problems.
Why You Need A Distiller
A recent Associated Press study revealed that at least one pharmaceutical drug was found in the treated water of 24 major metropolitan areas. Now 24 may not seem like a lot but actually we are talking about millions of people being affected.
Some of the drugs found included those for cancer treatment, cholesterol and high blood pressure. Equally shocking is an article in the Huffington Post which talks about the Environmental Protection Agency's refusal to have water authorities remove rocket fuel from tap water. Now do you see why having a home water distiller is important?
How Does A Distiller Work
They work by heat your tap water to boiling point, causing it to turn into steam. The steam is collected in a cooling chamber where it turns back into water, that is, healthy distilled drinking water. The contaminants that were originally in the water before distillation remain in the boiling chamber as the process continues. How Effective Is Distillation?
A distiller is highly effective in the removal of pathogens, waterborne parasites and heavy metals. Pathogens are widely considered to be the most serious of all the contaminants that can affect your tap water.
What is even more special about distillers is that they consistently provide high quality water even after prolonged use, whereas other types of devices such as reverse osmosis and carbon filters produce lesser quality water over time. The reason distillers are so consistent is because they rely on steam and gravity to remove contaminants, whereas other devices rely on components (like filters and membranes ) that diminish over time
Drawbacks
Perhaps the main drawback of distillers is the fact that it isn't effective in removing synthetic chemicals from your tap water. Many of these chemicals have boiling points that are lower than water.
Therefore, when your tap water is vaporized and transferred into the cooling chamber in the form of steam, those chemicals would have also been transferred into the chamber instead of being separated from the water.
Removing The Drawback
Some home distillers solve this problem by having a carbon filter attached to it. A carbon filter placed before the distillation process will remove any synthetic chemicals. Some units have the carbon filter placed after distillation has taken place, but this isn't advisable. Doing it after can lead to chemical contamination of your distilled water.
What Should You Do Now
How pure is distilled water? Certainly much purer than what is coming through your tap at the moment. Give your family the healthy water they deserve by getting a quality countertop distiller coupled with a carbon filter. This will undoubtedly result in the purest water possible
