The Small Business Owner And Management

By Chris Kennelly
Sep 22, 2009
The small business environment can be somewhat tough on the individual that becomes responsible for his or her staff members, which in most cases is a lot more personal than that of the larger corporation. The added responsibilities encountered by the business owner need to be shared accordingly so that the owner can stick to what he or she is good at, and that is growing the business, securing customers and developing new products or services. This is after all why the small business owner went into business, isn't it?

Issues such as financing, staffing and financial management are all very relevant and important issues facing the small business owner, however the individual should seek out capable and qualified people to manage these aspects. One of the biggest problems that these business owners face is that they do not want to relinquish control to anyone else, and this causes the problem of not having sufficient time to focus on the mentioned areas that these people are strong in. This will have an effect on the time management and workload of the individual concerned, which as we all know can lead to significant stress and frustration when trying to keep control of everything within the business.

In the case of managing the company through these cycles, there may come a time where you will have to turn business away, or at least consider outsourcing. This is a great opportunity for the company, however a suitable relationship will have to be developed with suppliers to the company to ensure that they provide a high standard of work, after all your customer will be looking to you for any incorrect specifications or shoddy workmanship, whichever the case may be.

Additional possibilities in dealing with tough economic cycles, as previously mentioned, as a small business owner can be the opportunity of taking your company online. This does not have to be an extensive online campaign, but perhaps a presence, as well as a small business blog, within which you can market your products and services via this online resource. The blog option allows for an extremely cost effective resource to establish your name online, and costs very little if nothing at all to establish at least a basic presence on the internet.

The small business owner needs to approach their business with a mindset that requires strength and discipline, which should also involve knowing when to let go, or delegate so that the company can benefit from their area of expertise, whilst benefiting from selected people within their areas of responsibility. Granted this may not always be easy to place these people within these positions, but the right people will definitely be found.
