Contemporary Research Findings Into Overtraining
Studies observing the biochemical mechanisms that lead to overtraining among body builders, have been very successful in recent days. There is no controversy today about what happens when body builders take training further than the body can. The following brief discussion highlights the facts that have been documented by recent studies on the area of overtraining among body builders. The authenticity of these facts or of the studies from which they emerged has been thoroughly ferreted.
When a body builder starts a session of high-intensity exercises, the body switches to a high metabolism speed on selective nutrients. To begin with, the body usually pumps a lot of cortisol from the glands and into the bloodstream. This cortisol when transported to the muscle cells, it helps amplify the break down of all available protein until they are in their basic constituent amino acid state. Upon break down, the amino acids are immediately routed to the liver where they are converted to glucose. Instead of relying solely on carbohydrates for the energy supply, the body starts using even the proteins you intended for building new tissues, for energy.
So when you stay in that gym hour upon hour, remember that the longer your workout session is, then the more the units of cortisol pumped into your system. The longer you take in the gym, the more the proteins you have are destroyed. When it gets really extreme, the body eats into your muscle tissues even, especially when cortisol levels rise to abnormal levels, which it does if training lasts for abnormally long. Experts refer to this metabolic state as a catabolic state.
When your body switches to the catabolic state, which it does when intensive training lasts for up to two hours or even less, then the largest chunk of your proteins are burned up for energy. Most proteins in the body are found in your muscles and that is actually where most of the cortisol is directed first. A research study by a team of experts conducted in Michigan last year was recently published and it added to the body of knowledge already available on the matter. According to the study, a single hour session of the most intense weight training leads to an increased storage of proteins, especially in your "secure zones". These secure zones are in the immune system and the skeletal systems. But if the intense training is taken to any further duration, the body begins to quickly deplete the available protein stores, even from the secure zones. The depletion of proteins is usually quicker than the storage.
Contemporary physiologists concur that overtraining usually prompts the body to eat itself. The synthesis of the proteins in the body then leads to a very weakened and exposed physical state. It becomes easier to catch a cold, the flu and other serious conditions. Even worse, catabolism makes it easier for you to tear the muscles ligaments, tendons and tissues during consequent training sessions. Even the lowest intensity level causes both overtraining and injuries. The body is far too weak to do anything, essentially because most of its parts have lost their key structural integrity, build and secured by proteins.
