Survival Tips For New College Students

By Art Gib

If you're a new college student, it seems like there just aren't enough hours in your day! You have to run to classes, run to work perhaps, run back to the dorms, grab something to eat, cram in as much studying as possible and maybe- just maybe - you'll get a couple hours of sleep in too. If you're having a hard time getting it all together, here are some tips to help you survive that tough first year.

-- Concentrate on your future. I know this may sound silly, but it's amazing how many freshmen end up forgetting why they are at college in the first place. Although it's essential to maintain a healthy social life, it's important to strike a workable balance between class and play. You should never miss out on your coursework: it is essential to your goals for the future. If you want to party, party, party, then perhaps you are not ready for college yet: take some time off and reassess your goals. If you are determined to stay in school, then make your courses your top priority: everything else will fall into place.

-- Eat well. Yes, your mother is right. Many first year college students get run down because their bodies are not getting the nutrition they need to perform at peak efficiency, and without mom hovering over you, it's easy to forget how to eat right. Concentrate on eating at least one serving of fruits and vegetables a day to begin with, and then work your way up to more. It's easy to keep a bunch of bananas in your dorm room or even some apples if you have a small fridge. Try eating salads for lunch or dinner three times a week. Don't try to compensate for poor nutrition with more coffee: it doesn't work.

-- Don't waste money. Try to keep a part-time job at the very least: this way, you will always have the pocket money you need to make life interesting while at school and you won't have the added stress of wondering where your spending money will come from. Spend what you do have carefully and learn some of the tricks that seniors already know: for example, never buy new or even used textbooks from the university bookstore. Buy your books online from a discounter and you could save hundreds; they will even buy your books back from you at the end of the year.

Being away from home for the first time doesn't mean you also have to be away from your common sense: remember the purpose of getting an education and concentrate on your classes; eat better, and spend your money wisely and you'll have a great first year.
