List Building: Why Do We Believe Impossible Things?

By Tellman Knudson

When I first got started in Internet marketing I didn't really completely grasp what a powerful Internet marketing tool a list can be. I heard lots of people talking about the importance of lists, and of course I heard the expression "the money is in the list, but it really didn't mean that much to me until I had a little more experience in Internet marketing. I wanted to believe that I could make money without having a list at all.

Now, of course, "I get it." I mean I REALLY get it. In fact, I have made millions of dollars because I "get it" and you can get it too, if you pay attention and learn. A lot of people that are new to Internet marketing know they need a list, but they are not really sure why. They think it's impossible! Let me fill you in.

Some people believe that a list is just a bunch of people that you can market to then you are heading down the wrong path. That is the way spammers think. They buy lists of names and send anything and everything to them hoping that somebody will buy something. They dump them into an autoresponder system, press the button and wait to "get rich quick." This is pure BS. Making money from people who don't know you or trust you just won't work. Don't do it.

Your list is a group of people who have signed up to hear more from you, or learn from you, because you offered them something of value and they liked what they saw... pure and simple really. They trusted you enough to provide you with their name and email address and they are basically saying,"Yes, I want to see what you can show me."

Now is the time to start bonding with your list, getting to know them and helping them to get to know you. You do this by giving them great information. Not all of it has to be free, of course, but you want to make sure that anything you send to them is of value on some level. If you recommend products and services to them, you want to be sure that it is something they will benefit from.

If you do this, over time, you will build a large and loyal following. Your readers will come to expect that what you say is important and worth paying attention to. This is where the "money is in the list" comes into play.
